Souplesse Casings and Bike Soup - The Tire Thread

I just found two 28mm paselas that I thought I had given away…probably going to just skid through those then buy something else. Might buy those Sectors to hoard too…been eyeing them for a while.

30mm barely fit under current fork but I have another fork I’m going to swap it for…just need to cut the steerer

You are about to do a 125mi gravel ride. There will be heavy rain the night before & medium to light rain most of the day. Do you ride:

  1. 33mm slicks with 45mm full fenders
  2. 42mm Pathfinder Pros with no fenders (clip on fender at most)

insuficient information:
is this gravel like crushed limestone midwest farm road, or is this “gravel” like Southeastern pine bog?

For the former, option 1 for the latter option 2.

wet limestone gravel dust effectively turns into concrete after it dries, which is really fun to clean out of drivetrains

I’d probably go with 42mm. If it’s raining all day fenders won’t make a huge difference anyway. Wear neoprene socks!

You waxed your chain right? I heard that makes your drivetrain invincible.

What 33mm slicks? I’ve had 33s sink rim-deep into mud for miles and its reeaaly not fun. Unless it’s all well maintained gravel without lots of mud and no loose descents 33mm seems like the wrong choice.

More info:

  • Roubiax Pro for the 33mm tires
  • The clears 42mm with no space
  • The route will be everything from sand to red clay

A [few] old [posts] to give an idea of the terrain variety.

if the mud sticks, you must run slicks

and thus we converge on option 3: big slicks, no fenders

An pack a mud scraper - big tongue depressor, paint stirring stick, small plastic putty knife, etc

Singlespeed if it’s really sticky…

I’ve done this route single speed 3x already I’m not gonna do it single speed again :joy:
Right now I’m leaning on 33mm and fenders. Maybe take the fenders off and run the 33s naked.

Took delivery on some real turds. The INFINITY is particularly turdly. I think the rubber on the center of the tread is about 5mm thick! The Nimbus is a little bit less ridiculous.

Fenders if you like the people you are riding with.

I don’t understand how fenders can functionally work when you’re gunking them up with devil soil (red clay)

for that reason I vote drive the route

I wonder if anyone has thought of using Teflon spray on tires to keep the mud off
