100 miles of gravel & dirt in the cold and damp on singlespeeds? How can this not be a cakewalk?

I dunno man, cakewalks fuckin suck.

Having ridden that tire and the 26 inch variant, in a spirited nature-way, my gut feeling is that the 26er is faster. Have not ridden them in slippy mud tho.

I want to know more about this bike and race

TC Zi think the only reason I don’t like these swift tires is that they have tread, and I have always viewed significant tread on an urban bike to be the mark of a True Noobā„¢ļø and I’m embarrassed to ride a bike with heavily treaded tires.

TL;DR the man behind the Trans-Iowa decided to hold a single-speed century in beautiful death-by-rollers Iowa in late March. It was cold, wet, and 100 miles of thick sticky clay. 76 starters, 10 finishers.

I think all the time and sanding belts would more than make up the difference between a $20 tire and a nice tire that fits the need in the first place

Possibly? The only pictures I’ve seen of the process are Peter Weigle with a filter mask & some giant bladed plane thing, so if he’s chucking the tire into something suitably spinny and leaning in with a plane it’s just a matter of the time (and the whole time == money thing is silly unless you’ve got a patron who will only pay you if you don’t do the thing.)

pretty sure i rode with him for a while at gravel worlds last year. of course, there were a bunch of large grey beards so it’s hard to be sure

as a former nebraskan i feel extremely seen

I bought an automotive tire shaver a year or two ago. Still haven’t used it. Seems like it would involve some kind of jig and a truing stand or spare fork in a vise. I got it to shave knobs off the best 650b tire ever made, the Thunder Burt—then I realized side knobs are pretty sweet.

(Those knobs do wear pretty quick though, but less so compared to the center tread)

Aren’t you at all curious to see how it would work and what the resulting tire would ride like? I am (but I don’t have a shopspace, the machinery needed to set up a wheel on a big old spindle so I can start shaving, or anything other than a rolling partsbin Bianchi thing that’s got my 26" wheelset mounted on it, so ugh I need to win the lottery.)

I’ve not seen that picture; I presume he’s got the wheel set up to underrun, so the pressure of the sanding strip will force the wheel it down into the jig?
