Souplesse Casings and Bike Soup - The Tire Thread

It’s cheaper for me to spend a hour cutting down an inexpensive tireset than it is for me to spend 3 hours building a rack to sell so I can buy an expensive tireset.

just grow a bunch of rubber trees and then burn some stuff mix the ash and rubber and make your own tires.

I’m not really seeing how I can do that in less than 3 hours?

What kind of mileage are you guys getting out of Byways (or Horizons)?

Mine are somewhere north of 6000km now. File tread is def worn in center section, several little cuts in the tread (that sealed up automagically), and starting to notice little threads coming loose near the bead.

Edit: I’m only asking because dithering whether I should swap them already because 400, 600 brevets coming up in next 6 weeks…

Double edit: hmm, good excuse to build another set of wheels and relegate the Byways to commute duty…

Every tire swap is a good excuse to build another set of wheels.

So I’ve ridden those tires. Probably not those particular ones, but another set that Peter did for a super fancy bike that a custom had many, many moons ago. Holy crap they were nice. Talk about clouds.

I only have a Horizon on the front but it’s been losing little threads near the bead for something like 3000 miles now. 6500 total but like I said, it’s a front tire. I suspect from looking at the wear it’ll go for at least another 3-4000 before the sun kills it.

Any opinions on the Gravel Kings in the 700 x 38 sizeway?

I think those were rated at ā€œturdsā€ somewhere ^ that way

overruled below

I thought that was all talk around the 650 tires.

But can I be bothered to search? No.

I’ve been cursing the 700cx32 Gravelkings, but from what I understand the quality varies wildly based on size. Which is not a great sign in general.

650bx48 are turds.

700cx38 are good, they’re slightly smaller than last year so expect them to be closer to 38mm than 40+ like they used to be.

Anyone know of a 26x1.5" tan sidewall, smooth tread, foldable bead tire? I have the Ribmo (in black) but I don’t think it’ll look quite right with this classic porteur build.

Dammit, was hoping they’d be crap so I wouldn’t be tempted to buy them to replace perfectly good and barely worn tires.

BTW, $32/tire at Excel Sports right now, in black and brown.

Edit: which maybe isn’t a great price, I don’t really know

700cx38 are good[/quote]

Yeah, honestly this seems to be the best sizeway of all the Gravel Kings, probably the best semi-fast road tire in that size overall.

Any word on the Challenge Strada Bianca 650b? These things look for promising, but I’ve never actually seen them for sale in Q, or anywhere else on the web.
