Spend my money!!!

Now, I know that I will probably get a bunch of answers regarding riding bikes, feeling sizing etc, but if you were going to buy a new road bike right now, what would you buy? I’m basically looking for something on a budget, like, 900 or less, preferably around the 700 mark. Brifters, decent preformance etc, suggest away.
P.S. if you have one, or even a road group, let me know!

I think getting a used one or one of those bikesdirect motobecanes are your only options.

get a scott addict

Look for nice wheels, and 105 or nicer gruppo. Shouldn’t be too much to ask.

Maybe like this

Under 5K… Under 15pounds
I know it does not really answer your question… but it probably illustrates the point that your budget might be too low… I know there are some bikes out there you can get, on your budget, but they aren’t sexy and they probably wont hold your attention too long either. I would buy used or Bikes Direct, and I would shoot for Ultegra or better. I was able to buy a full Ultegra in separate pieces off Ebay for under $300, and I was in a hurry! Just my .02

thats a sexy fucking bike. OP, you should buy that…

^^haha I wish.
looks like used will be the way I’m going. hopefully some craigslist adds I hit up will respond.

i would definitely say keep your eye on craigslist/ebay/ect. recently my brother’s wife got 2 sweet early 90’s roadbikes from a family friend for free - a beautiful serotta with a carbon fork, ultegra group (brifters too), OP/105 wheels and a c’dale with lugged steel fork, 105 group and OP CD4/105 wheels. basically what i’m saying is that there are tons of people out there who have no idea what they have sitting in their garage and you can use that to your extreme advantage.

also, thehappyrobot seems to have a nice cannondale for sale that’d probably be worth checking out.

thehappyrobot?
link?

  1. Sweet late 90’s steel with brifters on Craigslist

  2. Jamis

You could probably put something together cheap if you have some parts laying around. What are you going to use the bike for? You could get creative and make something really different from what’s out there.

You could build up that $70 road frame on Nashbar. Otherwise you’re looking at the Bianchi Brava and BikesDirect stuff.

You have two options:

  1. Used bike from eBay/Craigslist
  2. Bikes Direct

There are tons and tons of good deals on eBay, especially on non-prestige brands (I paid $650 for a full Ultegra Gunnar). If you don’t care about a label, you can do really well. Otherwise, Bikes Direct is the route you want to go. The cost on most of those bikes is equivalent to or less than what the dealer is paying, for what is essentially the same bike. Unless you work in a shop or have a hook-up who can get you stuff at cost, you’re never going to beat their prices new.

so I’ve been lurking about on ebay, but if I did decide to go the BD route, do you guys have some suggestions on specific bikes from them?

That really depends on what you want. You should go search the Road forum on the other board, there have been tons of threads about those bikes. I think that the aluminum Ultegra Motobecane is pretty popular. I know I see plenty on the roads and at races around here.

any feelings regarding

?
clearly my budget is prohibitive to bikes that are SUPER nice, but I really dont think I will ride a road bike enough to warrant a 1000+ dollar bike.

Fair enough. This was the bike I was thinking of, but I think it used to cost like $100 less. In fact, prices have gone up on almost everything, it looks like.

Anyway, that looks like a pretty good bike. And if you’re not totally committed to steal, then this does too. So does this.

I doubt that.

The thing is you are probably going to find that you ride the bike a lot! I imagine that you will like it so much that in a year or so you would be thinking of upgrading the Frame. That is the main reason to spend a little more and get one of the Ultegra bikes.

And lets just say you dont like it, and you want to unload the bike. It will sell better with an Ultegra group on it…

i’m shopping around for a road bike myself. i’m leaning towards a jamis satellite, or building up a surly pacer. i do want to stick with steel, i think.

Listen to this, it’s true. I got my '84 Schwinn Super Sport because I wanted a beater with gears so I could just chill on fixed for a while. Now I wish I had the money and waited to get something a little fancier 'cause riding road bikes fucking kicks ass. :bear:

More options asides BD and used:

I know this is a CX bike but I would highly recommend it unless you absolutely must have the road features:

stiggywigget commutes on one with over ~4k miles on it and some road tires and I am pretty impressed with it and the price.

This is a little more but a Bianchi road bike:

Better colors @ $850: http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/ … ra+07.aspx
Again thats a pretty sweet deal if you ask me.

Black and red is faster so this is nice too: http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/ … ke+07.aspx

I <3 GTs even if they don’t do the triple triangle frame style anymore
