Steel road bikes

that pinarello looks comfy

that picture was taken before i bought it…the saddle is about an inch lower and the bars are tilted a bit. it’s actually not that bad, but it’s not my commuter or anything.

It gives me crotch/back pain.

i have always been a fan of steel frame road bikes, i think they make the most sense in terms of a lot of factors. they’re good for riding, you know, on the road. take your track bike to the track.

As far as riding characteristics go, a steel track bike can ride just as nice as a steel road bike on the road. Practicality is another matter though…

I dunno, aluminum frames/carbon forks are starting to grow on me. I think tire choice/PSI/wheelset makes a bigger difference in harshness of ride these days.

most of these bikes look like track frames with gears. it that what they are? where does the rear derailler bolt up?
and what about the brake/shifter cables…

if i build one, im thinking soma?

No…they are all road frames, except for that Yamaguchi.

I went from wanting a road bike really bad, to picking up a real nice Kenevans with 600 gruppo one day, and a Miyata1200 with a Sante gruppo the next day. Both for the same price. Good times.

I <3 steel road bikes.

Ugh, why am I still awake and posting on tavcrkbike?

With the greenback in decent shape compared to the loonie, you can probably pick up a Steelwool for a reasonable price these days. Their Purelaine is pricey ($1192 f/f), but it’s one of the most well-rounded frames I’ve come across. As unpractical as it sounds, you could pick up one of these Wheels Mfg emergency derailleur hangers ( http://wheelsmfg.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=694&Itemid=27 ) to slap on the Sweet City Limited ($681 f/f/hs) or any other tarck frame for that matter.

i just ordered all the parts to finish putting modern components on older frame.
i see no need to have TWO steel vintage road bikes…

i was trying to hold out to get the chain and cables for cheaper from big place overseas but they’ve been out of stock for long time and i finally said screw it. i want to be able to ride that bike alot over the xmas break and burn thousands of calories.

Looks awesome, and I bet it rides great with the totally updated brake setup. I love old bikes but hate the old calipers and levers.

Thanks Blicks. I actually built that from the frame up so everything is new-ish, but those are the best brakes I have ever ridden, hands down. And I hate those skinny old brake hoods too.

One of the wrenches at the LBS was rebuilding an oldish steel Serotta that used to be his Dads, it was sparkly black with gold lettering and was totally sweet. I was jealous. A nice steel roadie is going to be my next bike purchase I think. Unless the right Cannondale comes up, then fuck steel (jk)

The rear tire/seat tube clearance on the first two is ridiculous. Do you have to deflate to get your wheel in and out?

here are a few i had when i was slutting around with bikes.

faggin.

this one was ok, handled kinda slow though.

had this one setup as 1x7, put der. on front and sold to my little brother to get something else.

i also had a nice Girodana that my boss gave me…had shimano 600 with dura ace 7400 cranks. it was too big by about 4cm though so i sold it to a taller friend. can’t find pics of that one. sorry.

my current one, the vintage one.
wish the seat tube were just a bit taller with the same length tt.

yes on the torpado it has 28c tires on it though…its my comfort bike…with 23s it wouldn’t have to deflate

the blue bike (a stowe) has 22c tubulars and short drop outs i still have to deflate the tire.
the wheelbase on it is really short 975mm…the wheelbase on the yamaguchi is 955mm

i think those sprinters are more like a 25c clincher though.
but yeah the torpado with 28c tires really pissed me off that one time i put the rear wheel one whenever that was.

shut up buttlicker
