Sturmey-Archer 3-Speed Fixed Gear Hub

Believe it.

It’s actually a two-speed freewheel with one fixed gear. It will be unveiled at Interbike, and won’t be available until mid-2009, but they have several working prototypes out there right now.

Interesting. Spacing?

Good question. I didn’t think to ask at the time. How are there 3-speeds spaced now?

SO. FUCKING. COOL.

Now there’s another bike on the list of builds sitting around in my head, waiting for money.

ugh. 2 speed freewheel w/ fixed sounds like teh suck.

If it were 2 speed fixed w/ free wheel, that sounds awesome.

or 2/3 spd fixed with a neutral option to coast down hills.

Yeah. I would consider this for my Cross Check - maybe with a dynohub up front.

I would love one for a winter bike, cept I wouldn’t want to ruin it by riding in the snow/salt. Any idea what the price point will be?

high.

r.i.p. sheldon brown

Are those approved for fixed gear use? Last I knew they were not, though people have used them with fixed gear.

they just changed the mechanism this year so it can be used fixed.

My jeans are now creamed… this is fucking great news.

Here’s the word from SA:

S3X Fixed Gear 3 Speed
So I know there are many of you out there that are very interested in the little bit of info I recently got my paws on.

The first batch of prototype Fixed Gear 3 speeds is finished. The new hub will be called the S3X. The hub will be made using a much stronger aluminum hubshell. Overall gear range will be 160%.
1st Gear -37.5%

2nd Gear - -25%

3rd Gear - Direct Drive

Gear step gear 1 to gear 2: 20%

Gear step gear two to gear 3: 33%

I should mention:
bonechilling is wrong above. It’s going to be a 3 speed fixed hub. “Direct drive” means there is no mechanical advantage applied by the planetary gears.

i just now noticed this. someone at Sunrace/S-A speaks l337.

more like teh S3X

Sigh… they didn’t name it after Sheldon.

i doubt he’d mind. sheldon smiles down upon SA from the bicycle guru heaven in which he now resides.

i can’t wait for this to be released.

woulda been nice though… considering getting it back in production was essentially his doing.

I thought fixed was about simplicity.
