Sure, most messenger bags are “waterproof” but after a few hours in a heavy downpour, your stuff’s gonna get soaked. Anyways, I decided I would give up the old messenger-bag-in-a-garbage-bag thing and get myself a proper rain-day designated waterproof bag of the backpack variety.
Ack, I promised myself I’d never make a stupid Canada joke, but come on this one isn’t about how America is cooler or something, this is making fun of the weather.
I have a Chrome Kremlin and a Chrome Backbone. I’ve never had any packages get wet using either one. Just remember to keep them in the parts that are actually waterproof, the whole bag is most definitely not.
Kremlin is $145 US and the Backbone is $160, both expensive (at least to me) but so worth it. I use the Backbone for winter cause that’s when I come across boxes and gift baskets and shit and honestly a backpack will always distribute weight better than one of the over the shoulder ones. It’s just less convenient, but it’s really a better but in the end.
The over the shoulders are cool if you only get envelopes and garment bags and what not. They handle those well but anything bulky they get real annoying. I like em in the summer cause they don’t hold in as much heat (At least they don’t seem to) as the backpacks.
Backpacks in the winter are fucking awesome cause you don’t need to wear anything more than a medium/heavy hoodie (at least here in NYC, I know Canada gets pretty fucking brutal) and you stay warm.
^Agreed. The Chrome looks nice, but I think I’m gonna go for the Heavy-duty kayak bag for 80$. I’ve had me one of these for the past few years (not mine):
It’s great but I want something with two shoulder straps for when the winter rolls 'round.
I bought a cycling specific backpack from mec about 3-4 years ago, but i dont see it on there website, maybe they just dont make it anymore. Anyways it has a built in rain cover, it comes out the bag from the top and wraps around the whole bag and stays in place with tacks on the backside. It works great, never a drop of water.
So check out there bike specific bags, maybe they have a new model or something. Its around 26-28 litre capacity.
I also have one of kemmer’s bags (backside), one of those chrome knockoffs. Its a mess. style bag but the interior vinyl lining is pretty good at keeping everything dry. I use it almost everyday, including winter.
