TAF, JA, or just WTH?

Low trail 650b x 42-48mm bikes with boxy bags are brilliant for fucking around in the woods adventuring on rough roads and singletrack and getting far away from services

but organized Randonneuring events in Western Europe and Japan have none of that

What’s the difference?

A boxy bag and not

“There is no way they finished a series riding like this”

Is the question I asked myself bunches of times

Yeah there are a lot of riders in the lower right quadrant.

For instance, some of you randos may be familiar with the Bay Area’s own Charlie Martin. He regularly does 600+ miles a week and whenever I meet him out on the road, he’s riding the most basic-bitch non-nerd-bike with the handlebar wrap in literal tatters. I think I introduced him to the idea of “handlebar bag so you don’t have to cram your jersey pockets with an entire ride’s worth of calories”.

(Looking at my Trek 1000 w/ a carbon frok, front rack, and rando bag) … they’re the same picture?

No, I think I might not be explaining it.

A steel fork with rack would be lower trail geometry.

Carbon fork would be somewhere in the 57mm trail.

So you’re talking about low trail versus medium trail, yes?

I’ve ridden 400s with racks on both types of those forks and I think 57mm trail is fine with a rack & rando bag.

yeah im perfectly fine with my ~55mm trail bike with a front bag

TAF, that looks super fun to ride, Onza porcs are allowed to be white, and whoever that is resisted the temptation to go too wild with anno colored matchy parts.
