TAF, JA, or just WTH?

Have one, it works well. The non-linear PSI gauge is a little weird the first time you pump up, but you get used to it. The clamp-on chuck is similar to the Tattico and does what it’s supposed to. I like the Silca push on presta chuck, but we have a bunch of bikes with schrader valves and I dislike threading pump heads on to valves.

thanks folks I got both the Silca Terra pump and their schraeder+presta chucks to try converting my JoeBlow, and if that doesn’t repair it I’ll just have to keep acquiring more pumps with which to dither

new order of business, did Merry Sales get asian knock offs of Wald baskets made?

or are they just marking them up at higher prices?

bonus demerits for knocking off / marking up Rivendell products

As i recall, Blue Lug talked Wald into making the racing baskets, then Merry Sales started to bring them in to USA, then Riv started carrying them.

Edit: apparently Riv concurs

But we’re now stocking Wald Racing Baskets, which are factory-cut-down models of the MED and LARGE. Ex-RIvver Sean did this so he could fit a basket better on his drop-bar Hunqapillar. Former shipper Jenny followed on her upright bar bike, proving that they’re not just for drop bars. These home-made Racer baskets didn’t have the heavier stays across the top, so were imperceptibly (theoretically) flimsier.

BLUE LUG bike shop in Tokyo wanted some Sean-Jenny style Walds, and ordered enough to make it Worth Wald’s While. Friend Jim Porter, owner of Merry Sales (a bike parts distributor and friend) said “Hey, guess what I’ve got…” And now we do, too.

Maybe just rebranded to be un-Riv?

I vaguely remember Soma having Wald half baskets on clearance last summer. Which would explain why I own one.

Those Tanaka baskets are stainless steel tho.

I submit this as the example of a bike being both TAF and JA, does that inherently make it WTH?

my assumption is that the Merry Sales/Tanaka baskets are foreign-made knockoffs, not rebranded Wald baskets or custom-from-Wald-for-Merry. AFAIK Wald has never fucked with stainless steel. Also note they’re constructed differently from the Wald baskets - the smaller diameter rods that make up the body of the basket are welded or brazed to the thicker rim, not wrapped around the rim like on every Wald ever.

Genuine Wald:

This is almost surely in reference to the fact that Merry Sales carries the genuine Wald half height baskets (139, 137), not a reference to the Tanaka knockoffs.

Note that Tanaka is knocking off the half height 137 and full height 137.

notice to tarckers I will kick you if you buy a tanaka basket over a wald

Is WALD MUSA?

I feel like for people geographically located in North America it makes sense to buy a wald

specifically kentucky, they’ve been making bike parts in the USA for over a century

when it’s MUSA and cheaper than the overseas knockoff, yeah it’s a no-brainer

You could easily put bike trays in the back with a cover over the bed for gear
