That's a nice rack you got there; shame if something happened to it...

Rack chat. What’s the best off the rack front cargo shelf? Rear junk cage?

I’ve been pretty happy with this one: http://www.somafab.com/archives/product/porteur-rack-black

The lady has this one with a wald basket on it, and it’s pretty good: http://www.somafab.com/archives/product/mini-front-rack

They both have eyelets for dynolights.

And this one is also pretty fuckin legit too: https://www.jandd.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=FREXT

I’ve used the following front racks:

Surly scaffolding edition: avoid

Rawland Demiporteur: seems fine so far but have really loaded it up beyond the recommended limit yet. Mk1 obv. I have a basket on it right now.

Nitto M18: it’s okay but the tang is worthless. I’m working on a new one but it’s been on the back-burner.

Specialized Pizza: They work just fine but sit a little high. I don’t own one atm but I intend to.

FWIW my Orc rack just passed two years of daily service without issue. I’ll probably take my fenders off today, and finally install the tiny rack he made for the rear of my NFE.

I’m using the Pass & Stow. Takes a big porteur bag and panniers. Nice light mount with internal routing (from the hub to the front light anyway) Have also been enjoying walking my kid to preschool on it with a bungee cord seat belt.

I’m really unhappy with the placement of the commas in the thread title.

Not sure what the fuck happened typing on my phone.

Edited edited.

i’ve had a custom (the platform is wider than normal) orc rack on my bike for four years with no issues

i had an early orc rack with many miles and great results - 30-40?lbs of wood portage, a human, using it as a step tool for myself. i’ve got full confidence in his work. my buddy had an orc rack that broke on pbp though, so there’s that.

I’ve been using that Soma Porteur for a while now. The only think I really don’t like is the eyelet attachment. It’d be fine for a sweet fixie on the front axle, but using proper fork eyelets took some grinding of the included tabs to make work.

Do you think the number of bike crashes from poorly designed (or mounted) front racks + recent popularity spike in front loading has increased in the past few years?
Every time I see a sub par front rack install I’m like

I didn’t even use those silly tabs.

How does one contact Orc?

The Haulin’ Colin is super sw8 but pretty much unavailable. Forget I mentioned it.

Orc can be found on Flickr IIRC.

There’s no way that front rack failures have brought about 1/1000th of the number of crashes and injuries that the brakeless fixie craze caused.

Anyone tried the Crust rack as a platform only?

Might be able to take more load compared to the Nitto Marks rack

that looks an awful lot like the rawland one

This one?!?!?

https://crustbikes.com/products/nitto-marks-rack-2/

That’s a mark’s rack, same as the rivdork one. It’s fine, but something more purpose built would be super nice.

the tubus Tara is nearly the ideal lowrider rack. I think you could take some design cues form that in a platform rack and have something both adjustable and strong. I really hate the way the struts are attached and adjusted on the marks rack.
