What Doug said. The 200 isn’t compatible with HR monitor or cadence. I’d like to have those otherwise I’d just stick to using my phone. I did hear from a guy at the store that was super stoked on his 200 though. Said it was plenty for his use.
My friend that used to post here can hook it up for 30% off at REI so I may be going in that direction. Turns the $369 premium model into a $258 premium model. So I’m pretty much sold with that much of a discount.
Regardless of snow, your state still recognizes the lunar calendar and accepted norms for naming of seasons. The 705 (oops) is discontinued and as an older model has a longer track record. That is a neat way of saying low failure rate. I will credit you that regional climate can play a major part in the performance of electronics but overall a 500 is still a downgrade from it. The 705 was included in the last major firmware update, L/R PM data etc.
The 500 on the other hand bricks half the time you update it, is by far the most heavily RMA’d item they make, designed so the screen cracks easier than other models, and is generally just a turd in light of the amount of constant problems it has.
The 200 was made for mtb whether it was marketed through their ranks as such or not. Speed/cadence sensors break very easily on a mtb.
The other new/used option that gets use among people who DGAF is the Forerunner series. The 305 on up are compatible with everything but a PM and work just as well for Strava plane rides as the above options. The cases on them tend to be fairly rugged and sealed as they are designed as watches.
All of that is pretty irrelevant if you get tempted by REI bro deal. My core point in the first response was just to throw up a common sense flag around buying a flawed unit that is going to be replaced by a newer model in the very near future.

I can definitely attest to some of this. Edge 500 is still a good training tool. If you need a navigation tool, look elsewhere.

Woah there little buddy, slow the fuck down. He was just making a comment on our weather patterns.
All products are eventually replaced and are upgraded to bigger better more fantastical things. I’ve heard nothing but good things about the 500 right up until you started click clacking at your keyboard so forgive me for not letting “common sense” guide me on this one.
Hell, I’m not selling the damn things so it doesn’t bother me if or what you buy. Glad I didn’t even get into BLE or smaller competitors who can’t break the distribution wall to reach consumers. Nothing to get butthurt about in the least. I was just offering some seasoned advice.
Over 1.5yr of use, my 500 finally started locking up/freezing during rides while using the courses feature. Has been less than ideal for riding in places I have absolutely no knowledge of, but it gets the job done in terms of gathering data points.

The screen on my 500 broke after I breathed on it wrong. Called Garmin and they replaced it for free. I’ve had some weird software issues which are annoying, but by and large, it’s pretty good for gathering data.
The 500 replacement got back burnered when the Vector PM didn’t make it to market. The LOOK/Polar version doesn’t use ANT+ so they had this dandy firmware update they put some bad code in to occupy enthusiastic owners in the meantime. Brim Brothers was the only other one who could realistically use the L/R data field other than labs or high end gym equipment. There is a slough of trainers coming out that promise to make good use of independent power data and map where in the pedal stoke it is applied.
I just saw yesterday that the new Garmin multisport watch has all the capability of the 500 on top of being waterproof and much less prone to screen damage. The updates to Connect make setting intervals way easier and it has TSS et al nowadays too which is nice.
SRM is putting GPS in the next PC version, or the next, which should be interesting. One hopes that if they feel they need to make you use a proprietary software it works very well for calibration of the PM and GPS. We can only hope to have such German precision forced on the willing consumer.
I’m pretty sure all of that came out if you happened to be looking in the right spot. Not exactly detailed schematics and tooling for some entirely new bike part not slated to even be whispered about for another 10 years.
