Last I heard, he wasn’t over trained. Doug, what’s your stress balance, presently?
well it says zero but i’m guessing -10 ish is more like it
my garmin went dead at mile 54 after only 4000ish feet on the RGR
but i feel pretty good. no neck glands swole or sore throat in the morning like i usually get after too much riding
mostly worried if i can A) heal from this terrible purple hammertoe i got skateboarding yesterday B) put together two mostly sober weeks while desperately searching for someone to hump
any idea how i can manually fudge the ride to more accurately depict the actual work done to make my TSS more correct?
Guess at your TSS for the day, select that ride in GC and manually set the TSS to what it should be.
At this point, you need to focus on keeping the volume up for the next few days before you begin your taper.
well i got the tnw’s tomorrow and some epicness for weds planned
I’ve posted about this before, but I wanted to get tarck’s thoughts on this.
Powertap is too spendy for me and I think I could live with reduced accuracy in exchange for cheapness and versatility.
I think I would only consider this if there is an Ant+ device and compatible app for iPhone that is worth a shit though. Budget does not allow for a Garmin right now. Maybe in the spring.
Right now I’m just thinking about this in terms of ways to make putting in time on the trainer a little more tolerable/interesting and hopefully learn some stuff and gain a little fitness in the process.
Is this a dumb idea?
As a carrot on the trainer, could be a good thing. In terms of a purely scientific tool for training? Eh…
Yeah. Pretty much how I’m looking at it.
Speed sensor would be nice down the road with a Garmin, and since it doubles as a cadence sensor I could use it work on leg speed when on the trainer. It would give me something to look at/shoot for.
Estimated wattage when pulling my kid in the trailer up hills would also provide some lulz.
dood you can for sure find an old wired one to a clapped out rim for near that money
seen em for like 2 and 2 fiddy earlier this year
that thing seems kinda pointless unless you really really wanna see a number ending in W in real time on a garmin
otherwise couldn’t you just get a plain wireless HR meter and do the wattage guestimation later on your real computer?

All good points.
- For use in the outside world I want a solution I can move around easily to different bikes running different brakes and drivetrains.
- Not interested in building another wheel right now or fucking with a Powertap hub.
I suppose if I could get wireless speed/cadence/hr that might be good enough for my purposes. I do see the fred appeal of an estimated W number, but honestly I just need some kind of numbers to shoot for and some shit to look at because I fucking hate riding a trainer.
just go by HR then and be aware of the limitations
Depending on your trainer, you may be able to rent/borrow a PT and plot the watts versus speed to approximate power output with just a speedometer. Kurt Kinetic has the power curve for their trainers already, but you should be able to approximate a curve for any other trainer: http://www.kurtkinetic.com/powercurve.php
Today I did a 5 min and attempted a 20 min.
5 min went great. Set up a screen on my garmin to show only time and lap (avg) power. Held around 450w (need to check the file). It hurt.
On the 20 min attempt, I ran out of road. I could have turned right and kept going, but it would have been into city traffic with no shoulder and slightly downhill. I got a little over 15 mins out of it and avg’d 344w. I felt okay after, so I’m pretty sure I could have held it for another 5 mins. On this one I kinda just picked a number and didn’t let my avg fall below. Hard to tell if I could have squeezed out more.
There’s a psychological mindfuck when you’re doing these fuckers.
Protips:
[list]
[]set your Garmin to show a 30s rolling average.
[]find a better piece of road. When I was “training” I’d regularly do 60-90m sessions without putting a foot down
[*]learn to use golden cheetah

Garmin 500. Get me into buying one.
i’ve been thinking about this too.
also is there any reason you couldn’t use a 200 for navigation as long as you plan the route out first?
fuck a 200
eventually you will need that ant+ for something
buy a 500 used maybe?
i seen em for about 2 hundy
That shit is old and if that is your game you should get a 700 or use your phone for the Winter.

We don’t have winter in Houston. It was literally 95 degrees yesterday.

A what? There’s a 705, but that’s been discontinued.
The edge 500 is fine for any kind of training.
