the look out honey coz im usin technology aka the garmin/powertap/srm thread

It’s been 12 weeks training with power and I see my numbers are up at least 10% across the board. I have a rest period planned next month; I’m interested to see where my FTP is versus what GC is modelling.

If the snow ever clears, my first race of the season will be in 2 weeks. The course kicks my ass because of the altitude, but I’m hoping the added horsepower plus the weight loss will keep me from getting passed by my 2-minute buddy.

what are my options for a spiderless powermeter road crank?

just SRAM Force + Stages?

anything in 180mm?

any experience with this? https://www.powertap.com/product/powertap-g3-rear-disc-hub

Rival GXP stages180mm are on close out right now.
What BB bb?

Ive had a power tap since 2005. I loved it, did heaps if TTs on it. Preferred it, with Wheel covers on, over my Corimma Disc. If you are into performance, and believe the gospel of Heiney, a stiff carbon disc has to be slower than a spoked wheel anyway because there should be less vibration in a spoked wheel. A lot of the pros now use spoked wheels with covers, rather than carbon sandwich, not that you could tell. You used to be able to get the covers cut to fit any rim at Wheelbuilder.com. My Powertap is wired but I have not heard of any issues with the ANT ones. That recent power meter podcast on cycling tips.com was a great listen, but I am not current enough to read between the lines and know which ones were shit, as the infocrank guy alluded to. I found it a great tool for training, but once I stopped giving a rats arse I found the TMI a bit annoying and now I just use it for 1 or 2 TTs a year.

30mm spindle could be fine, even a non-386 one, does that open any doors?

I think you are confusing Fred’s disc and your disc.

Oh. I see what you mean. No I wasn’t. I heard the early ones were prone to erroneous readings due to heat transfer. No idea what the latest ones are like.

Lol @ fred riding a disc wheel, or an aero wheel cover for that matter.

Fred, not too many options in 180. We only make tune carbon/ 30mm meters up to 175 since they’re actually fsa arms. Only other thing that comes ling is dura-ace.

There are other spiderless options. Rotor in power, 4iiiis, etc. Lots of pedals, but guessing you wouldn’t be into going that route.

Powertap is disc hubs are not too popular due to the proprietary rotors. PT hubs in general have unmoved in recent years though (the hub itself, as the meters have not changed much).

power tap chainrings?

Yes and no. You’ll need to find a crankset in 180mm and the check what meters work. 175 opens a lot of doors.

Maybe one of those pedal meters? The Look or Polar offerings look like they may not suck.

Well, anything but Polar. Pedal meters are probably a good bet for maximum compatibility.

The look/polar offerings are the same product.

Best pedal for your buck is the bePRO.

Even if a double-sided SPD power-meter pedal exists, there’s no fucking way that it’s going to survive the way that Fred will use it.

True.

Fred, this is probably your best bet:

Or for a 30mm crank, get one of those fsa adventure whatever jawns in 386 evo in 175mm:

If this is for Fred’s Elephant, than this would actually be perfect with the new FSA Adventure crank.

rotor does 3d+ in 180mm. + power2max and you’re set

I’ve had to send 5-6 FSA cranks back in the past year for creaking spindle/crankarm, (with and without power meters) if you’re hard on your shit i’d look elsewhere (iirc they do k-force light in 180mm)

^ he said spiderless, I assume wanting to run sub compact rings or something. Not gonna work with p2max or ptap rings.

well i’ll see myself out

I was looking for power meter options for my MTB for next season and stumbled across the CINCH Power Meter. It’s basically a 30mm spindle that would work with a direct mount chainring. Wiggle appears to have the Turbine crank in a 180mm length that uses a 30mm spindle. At a $600 MSRP, that looks to be a nice option as well.

I’m currently considering getting a set of ZEE cranks and a blemish Stages for myself. I have a potential line on a used set of SIXc cranks that I could also pair with the Stages.

As an aside, I’ve been training with power for 6 months now. The gains I’ve had versus a traditional periodization approach have been unparalleled. I didn’t believe the hype before, but it’s warranted.
