the look out honey coz im usin technology aka the garmin/powertap/srm thread

oh for sure, the makeup of even gilbert vs contador is pretty different. I just think its silly to say “holy shit that pro athlete is fucking amazing at what he does”

agreed. it’s kind of like : well yeah. that’s why they get paid to do it.

but to be honest, enough training hours spent wisely will make anyone pretty fast, though probably not to that level. I’ve yet to hit a point where I’m not seeing gains. The only thing holding me back last year was autoimmune bullshit and I still managed to hit 4.4w/kg which was great for my first year with a coach. I don’t think of myself as geneitcally talented by any means.

for sure, thats very good. To hit that 0.01% requires more than just training, more than just physical gifts and more than the mental edge.
Let me expand: the money and talent/physique in the TDF just seems quite a bit higher than national cross racing.
Those stats we are seeing are pretty comparable to TDF shit.
Not really. To win the TdF, a cyclist needs to put down >6w/kg. With a 424w FTP, Mr. Trebon would hardly qualify as a rolleur at his weight and he’d likely get killed on anything steep. By comparison, he outweighs Chris Horner by ~35lbs and has roughly the same FTP. That’s a world of difference. Finally, the freaks at the TdF are not only the most powerful cyclists, but the ones that can recover and continue to ride well over the course of 3 weeks of hell.

I’m sure that Mr. Trebon is genetically gifted, but I imagine those gifts are mostly around his anaerobic work capacity.

Nah. If this were true, I’d be much faster. In my best condition after training for >12 hours per week I still produced way less power than a couple of other tarck folks with relatively similar lean body mass. Doug, for example is 1t 175lbs and I’m guessing around 12-15% BF giving him a 150lb LBM and a ~300w FTP vs. my best 280w FTP following months of dedicated training and a 185lb LBM.

Genetics, or more specifically, how genes are expressed makes an enormous difference in athletic performance.

i was talking to this kid whos a domestic neo-pro for the exergy team and he says even at his level its apparent who’s got the genes and who does not. there are guys on the team who train half as much as he does, eat like shit and still shred him on raceday.

this stuff is hella interesting to me. like how does this athlete gene get passed to some, but not others?
i wish somewhere offered a genetic sports anthropology class

It’s unfortunately, not well-understood at this point. At least, not to the degree that there are undergraduate level programs that cover the topic. In a lot of cases, it’s simply the right combination of genes that get stimulated under the right circumstances. Like this:

Full paper: http://www.fasebj.org/content/17/13/1812.full.pdf+html

thanks!, bookmarked it for after the term is over.

also, i was reading something awhile back there are some genes for “super awesome tendons”

fucking wish i had those genes

Pretty sure I got that one. That, and good teeth.

yeah i had that one, but pissed it away on drugs and slurpees

:frowning:

Good teeth genes trump drugs and slurpees, or in my case over a decade of Mtn. Dew consumption with zero dentist visits and zero cavities.

Dem genes.

yeah its has to do with PH of your saliva or something

anyways, i haven’t been hitting my numbers at all lately. trying not to be disappoint.

i think something’s wrong with my bike fit. talking with the team about going to a local fitter/coach for a group deal

it might just be the weather, but fucking everything hurts

You’re burnin out doug.

Take a week off the bike. Concentrate on nailing your finals.

We’ll ride our asses off during the break.

burn out has such a nasty ring to it

i like the way this sounds better:

school related stress has impeded my ability to recover properly

Quite possibly. Are you sleeping okay? Maybe back off the intensity a bit. I’d still like to see you put more hours on the bike, though. Maybe go on some long easy rides. Get your PT going and put your computer in your pocket. Enjoy the scenery.

sleeping good, just hard to get into a rhythm when your getting like 7 hours a week on the bike.
my legs feel two different sizes n shit

i’ll get out much more after this next week

I find this helps when I am hitting a wall. I have a friend who is fairly new to riding so I use my rides with him as recovery and enjoyment.
I needs a power meter :frowning:

halbritt is selling his.

Ok. I need a power meter, and I need money for a power meter.

i need an srm cable to computer dealy so i can look at my sprint effort output.
