The Rivendell Rage Reader: A thread for the pure joy of hating on Grant P

Tell him his rack is crooked for me

He seems like a nice guy. I like reading his emails every Friday. Rivendell really needed someone like him who can make rivs kind of cool to the younger crowd.

The Shimano derailers were called “RapidRise,” and internet has no shortage of their critics. The critics are wrong.

They’re sold out already, how many were in stock? I thought Grant said 100 in the first batch?

There were 100 people interested in buying a $150 rapid rise derailleur on a Friday?

The customer scale for niche bicycle stuff always eludes me.

It came in a nice branded box perfect for collectors. If I wasn’t already flush with etap and 12sp deore danglers I prob would have

So something I didn’t see was how many gears it shifts - just that it shifts up to 36t

I bought a bakers dozen to squirrel away in my parts dungeon, just past my tubular humidor

Looks like it should have the same pull ratio as an old 7/8/9 speed derailleur, but if you friction shift it like Grant intends, use a cassette with as many cogs as you like.

It looks better than I thought it would. Really pretty nice. Good for them and I hope they are able to sell a bunch more.

That’s a really good looking dangler and Rapid Rise is the way and the light.

Never used a rapid rise, I understand that the spring tension is reversed, but does it really feel that different? I don’t find shifting in either direction to be difficult on any type of shifter, road, mtb, thumb, whatever.

It doesn’t feel any different. If you somehow break the cable you get to ride home on the big cog.

Optimized for a mighty what if

They don’t fit in my drawer as well

Honestly, glad they were able to make it happen and hopefully the whole project sells enough to make them some money.

I’ve only ever had one on an old rigid Stumpjumper, but it’s nice to blast through gears going up hill or scrambling up over a ledge or something. I was bummed when Shimano killed Rapid Rise, but I guess not desperate enough to horde old 9s RR XT danglers

Rapid Rise feels great with indexed shifting, especially STI or Trigger

you can downshift multiple gears while stopped and the derailleur will catch up pretty gracefully with the shifts as you start pedaling

it makes the initial install process a bit conflicted, easier if you do the initial derailleur mounting and cabling without a rear wheel on the bike — but then you needed a rear wheel installed to align the hanger or set the limit screws

I used to really like them, but mine was on a shimano pull gripshift bike, so when swapping bikes I never shifted the wrong way, cos my other bikes had triggers. Was looking at the PLP thing on the Madrone dangler and was surprised at how rough it looked in one particular area. Great that its rebuildable tho.

I enjoyed that review right up until he said the price.

Agreed. Really does great with “modern” ramped and CNC’d cassette cogs, because it relies on spring pressure and so shifts at the more optimal points for the chain to be doing it’s thing. Vs. typical derailleur that when you push on it forces the chain to a bigger cog over whatever teeth happen to be nearby at that instant.

I’d be curious to try it but kinda like @johnasavoia, top-normal danglers have been giving me enough of it. Wouldn’t mind snagging an old 9s Shimano off ebay but after all the blahging I’m sure the prices have gone up enough to put me off
