They’re fine they just have really long lever so you need to run them really inboard on the bars and pull the reach way in if you want that 1 finger action
If it says Shimano on it and they’re wet, it’s good.
ST-4720-R
ST-4720-L
Left + right wet shake
10 speed pie plate up to 34t
10 speed chain
Only issue is you can only use:
RD-4700-GS or SS dangler
i don’t think this is actually the case? 11-speed shimano seems real solid. And if yer talking older shimano 10-speed road stuff, it was noticeably more finicky/less forgiving of neglect than the newer 11-speed stuff. “new” shimano 10-speed road (Tiagra 4700, GRX RX400) is on the road 11-speed cable pull rather than the old 6/7/8/9/road10 cable pull, and is very robust. Conveniently, those are the only 10-speed wet-brake shakes…
XT wheelset will indeed play better with 10-speed cassettes.
post-mount frame means that you’re gonna have to mix&match MTB post-mount calipers with your hydro shakes, because Shimano has gone all-in on flat mount for road stuff. The combo works fine, it’s just more work on your end to buy all the right bits.
Or now the new RD-RX400! Pretty much the same capacity as the 4700-GS, but the clutch is neat.
Thanks errybody!
You can use any 11 speed Shimano rear dangler that clears the cog.
Those work so frickin good for $66 I would (and have) put them on everything that doesn’t need shreddy levels of performance.
I am a little confuse then–if I get the Tiagra 4700 or GRX RX400 does that mean I need an 11s dangler to match the cable pull?
Things are coming together a little more: I’m thinking 10s mechanical all the way. Given that this is a dirt/CX build, I am thinking a clutch dangler would be nice (otherwise, hell, I’d be sticking with good ol’ 9 speed and TRP spires). Not at all sure what direction to go with that.
I should probably start my own fopmobile/semideadendermobile thread for this.
Yes, someone please make a spreadsheet for @b-roll
You need the matching 4700 or RX400 derailleur, OR an 11-speed dangler.
Basically, 10-speed Shimano is now split into two eras:
- “old” 10-speed. Dura Ace (7800/7900), Ultegra (6600/6700), 105 (5600/5700), Tiagra (4600). Same derailleur motion ratio as everything Shimano 6/7/8/9-speed, with some eensy weensy exceptions**
- “new” 10-speed. Tiagra (4700) and GRX (RX400). Same derailleur motion ratio as the 11-speed Dura Ace (9000/R9100), Ultegra (6800/R8000), and 105 (5800/R7000).
This applies for both the danglers and the pushers!
You can’t mix&match old and new 10-speed derailleurs and shifters.
You can mix&match old 10-speed with 6/7/8/9-speed.
You can mix&match new 10-speed with 11-speed.
**6-to-8 speed 7400 Dura Ace is it’s own weird thing; and maybe there are some other oddball parts I’m forgetting
Added a review of doval 110 bcd nerdrings, since people were curious about them and apparently only I bought some. tldr, they are approved.
Got an ebay/other link for a set of 110 5 bolt to add to that entry? I’m only turning up the 4 bolt 110 currently (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/123296546152) and the 6G 4/5 bolt 46/34 (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/264097263841) or the superoval TT rings.
I’ll look. they are real but a bit tricky to find as i recall. seems like that hasn’t changed. Real 5bolters do exist.
THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS
might pick up a pair of the 46/30 4 bolt shimano rings in lieu of buying a whole dang new GRX crankset that might not work with my other stuff because new chainline
if your bike is standard 135/142 the grx should have the right chainline
Dovals fuck with chainline too, although i did not find this to be noticeable.
You’ll be off by a couple of mm over 400mm or so. Not a real big deal.
Hmm, the literature I’ve seen says that the GRX cranksets push chainline out like 2.5mm. Not enough to make a big diff?
road cranks mostly have a chainline set for 130 spacing. 135/142 is 5mm wider and so assuming no offset funkiness (e.g. cannondale, cervelo bbright maybe?)the chainline should be 2.5mm further outboard.
Just like how it used to be that 130 was road, 135 was mtb and they corresponded with 68 and 73mm shells, which get 2.5 extra mm on each side. but now 68 is mixed with 135/142 more than the past anticipated
