The "What's it Worth" Thread Redux

Nerds like us need to remember that building a bike like these is beyond most people.

You probably could have gotten $200 more than that if you were willing to let it sit for a while.

Here’s a fun one: in 2008 I bought a new Cross Check for a little over $1000. In 2019 I sold it for $700 and used the funds to buy an El Mariachi for $750. A couple of weeks ago I sold the El Mariachi for $950.

I bought a serotta f/f in (2012-3?) for $75, had eric replace the TT, make a fork and powdercoat matching fenders for ($600?), built it up and was made fun of it on tarck for a year or two. Traded f/f/hs/fenders straight across for a 2013 el mar. Sold the el mar in 2017 for $1200 with upgrades

The real value was in the trolling. You can’t begin to put a price on that.

he added disc tabs too? this is that Serotta?

What should i actually ask for this thing?

Finally parting ways with my 54cm Gunnar Hyper-X gravel/cross bike. I really didn’t spare anything building this up, but space is at a premium and i am trying to upgrade some other bikes.

so am i out of my mind to think of starting it off at $3200 on cl? I’ve never had anyone not haggle super hard here.

dude didn’t you just finish building that?

Go for it. What have you got to lose?

I’ve had it for nearly three years. It’s only been like this since about March. Really don’t feel like I have space for this and the lht since they are basically the same bike.

I’d throw it up for $2,999 and see who nibbles. It’s nuts out there right now

why not sell the surly then? wider recognition + tax on turdly buttways and you get to keep a cool gunnar

Counterpoint: you could probably only get $700 or so for the Surly on a good day.

You could always sell both, buy something nice in the $1,500 range, and pocket the remainder

i like the surly better. i’m tired of dealing with hydro discs without shop space, for one thing, and the surly’s all dented to shit and i’d feel bad about selling it to someone for more than scrap.

@Mankato_Pet_Cremation_LLC I kind of want to build up a Neutrino when they are available again.

Having done rude things to my Cross Check (sensu stricto) over the last couple of winters, I’m thinking of going to an aluminum frame to minimize the carnage on my salty, wintry commutes.

It seems weirdly fitting to consider this:

Someone talk me out of this or enable. I’m ready.

Looks like a bike

No fender mounts :colbert:

Still gonna corrode, You need to go titanium.

titanium seems like a terrible thing to toss into the abyss that is salt life.

TC it’s coming to my house next week. Stock up on replacement dropouts, solve the fender problem and I think it could be OK. P-clamping this frame feels like an enjoyably transgressive move.

I am a fool.

Honestly, I know very little about rust and corrosion of bicycles due to salt.
