$400 lock up bike
I live in seattle now with a 20 mile rt commute into downtown/cap hill. so lockup bike still needs to be efficient fendered and comfortable.

90s basket-mtb is calling your name
todd what size are you? arizona has a ton of bikes on CL
Im in Seattle.
OH WELL THAT CHANGES THINGS
what size are you
lol,
Small? 48/50?
Not totally interested in inheriting someone else’s dirty kludgy thing…
The only problem with the Endpoint idea which I could make work $$ wise is coffee grinder / backpack commute for the unknown number of months until the second round ships…
get the kona, ride it, you’ll be fine. I mean, you’re at the level where 700c commuter bikes have funny geometry to make up for the giant wheels in the tiny frame, but any production bike is gonna be a little weird, and konas are generally pretty solid rigs.
otherwise Raliegh has some 650b commuter bike that might be OK, might be total garbage, but it’s $600 (less on promotive), which would get you a nice H/G frameset with the remaining money.

oh dear, this is a little larger than anticipated
hella curious about how this goes…
I did a cross bike/backpack commute for a bit after my commuter got stolen. It wasn’t terrible, although grocery shopping with it was another story.
Most modern aluminum hybrids are gonna ride much more like “steel is real” than either of those
If you’re considering the Marrakesh Flat Bar, would you want to try my Specialized Crossroads that’s got similarly long geometry? I’d been planning on finding a good new home for it anyway!

dat bandolier
flat bar endpoint
You should totally take Fred up on his CrossRoads offer. Those were rad bikes. I’ve always wanted one but they rarely pop up locally.
Can Todd ride a Fred bike?
Oh right, he said he was after a 48 or 50cm frame.
Scratch that.
it does have a foot and a half of exposed post… based on the HT it looks like a 50ish seat tube
The whole reason to get on an alu hybrid thing would be to have basically that bike but with wet dicks…
I could maybe hold out for round 2 of H/Ds… I only have 8 weeks of commuting left until September.
Other new development though…
Salsa is trying to give me a credit at my local shop for the wholesale cost of the El Mar frame (like 450) that broke, which unfortunately doesnt get me anywhere as far as still having a SS mtb is concerned b/c that shop has no real options for me ,
(except shelling out extra $$ for a Ritchey and then building out a new rear wheel).
I may be able to have them apply the credit to my old shop in AZ and get a Kona Unit which would be a real EZ swap.
Other idea is to put some pressure on Salsa to give me retail credit for the El Mar so I could go to a shop with an actual replacement option, if I got that much I could use some of the insurance money to get a Gunnar which would be a pretty fucking bad ass thing.
I’m guessing Montlake is your local shop? (based on the Salsa and Gunnar shop talk)
They’ve got some older El Mars in there. I wonder if they’d cut you a deal on one since Salsa is kind of screwing you by only reimbursing you wholesale cost.

ST is 48cm c-c
you’re welcome to borrow it to commute on, would help if you have some suitable cranks to swap onto it

Westside bicycle, the Gunnar might work out if we can do something something to order one, or again if they let me transfer the frame credit to another salsa shop.
Edit: Thanks Fred! If I end up ordering a H/D I may take you up on it.
