Yup the 1984 LA Olympics is probably about when it started…
Maybe its some sorta brakeless ninja-zen thing.

I’ve been to China few times recently, and a huge portion of the population wears a mask when they are out-of-doors. The air really is that bad.
What’s next, scraper bikes on the track?
I didn’t give the mask a second thought.
Those shades on the other hand…
All the dude is missing is his katana.
I heard yesterday that all U.S. athletes were being advised to wear a mask from the moment they touched down in Beijing. Obviously that seems a bit overkill…but whatever, I suppose. there was a seperate article in the competitor about a mountain bike qualifier where a bunch of guys didn’t even finish, and could hardly breathe by the time they finished…
well it was major news when the air index hit 44 for a day about a week ago. the “normal” (read: normal != healthy) index is below 50. major news when beijing dipped below it.
I’m not surprised, and I bet there won’t be many records set this year. Not in the outdoor sports, at least. I remember when I lived in Hong Kong as a kid, every morning we would check the Air Pollution Index on the news every day. Usually about once every two weeks, asthmatic kids had to stay inside at recess because the API was too bad. Never lived in Beijing, but I remember visiting when I was 11 or 12 and noticing as soon as we stepped outside that the air there was immediate, noticeably worse.
and i thought i got alot of eyeballs going through an airport with a beard and dark skin… ive got nothin on the ninja cyclists.

i’d wear a mask too.
I was watching the news last night and there was a special feature on this very subject. They interviewed an Olympic mountain biker who did some races in Beijing a year ago. His bronchial tubes severely constricted after 20 minutes due to the pollution. Only 8 out of 40-something racers finished.
And I thought it was bad here…
update!
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080805/sp_ ... s_masks_dcReporters just can’t put 2 and 2 together. They’re definitely ninja masks.
