Holy shit that’s so bad ass.

How can such an ignorant idiot be the chief communications officer of the U.S. Olympic Committee?
Many if not most endurance athletes will use a mask before their race when they go outside, it’s been all over the news. I’m not even sure about the outside thing making any sense… you’d have to suppose the buildings are air conditioned and have filters that efficienty filter out the particles, otherwise they’ll not politley stop at the door for your sake.

Also, Haile Gebrselassie will not even go to Beijing because of the fucking pollution of the fucking chinese. Fuck that. Probably his only ever chance of winning the marathon gold. Fuck.

BTW afaik far east people wear masks not bc of pollution but when they have a coughing illness. Don’t want to infect others. Impressive.

I’d hope that that anyone named Haile (…)Selassie would smoke enough bud that a little Chinese air wouldn’t pose a real threat. Not seriously. But damn, good name.

Gebre is the best long distance runner of the last 30 (50? million?) years.
What does being called selassie have to do with weed?

haile selassie (spell check me) is supposed to be the god incarnate worshiped by rastafarians.

You spelled it right. He was the King of Ethiopia during the first half of the 20th Century.

A shame he’s not doing the marathon but I believe he is doing the 10000m.
Masked US cyclists apologize to Olympic organizers
6 hours ago
BEIJING (AFP) — Four US cyclists who wore masks over their nose and mouths over pollution fears when arriving in Beijing apologized Wednesday to Olympic organizers, US Olympic Committee chief executive Jim Scherr said.
Mike Friedman, Bobby Lea, Sarah Hammer and Jennie Reed were among about 200 athletes from an American delegation of 596 who were issued masks by their US sport governing body to combat pollution in Beijing.
“They’ve now seen how their actions have been perceived,” Scherr said. “They were very eager to take the right action, which was to apologize to their hosts.”
But US officials said they would not ban US athletes from using masks to combat pollution, whether in sports events or not, if they felt it was needed because of air quality conditions.
“They have the right to wear masks if they feel it’s in their best interest to do so,” Scherr said. “Hopefully they won’t have to use them and the air quality will be good.”
The perception that Beijing’s pollution, which prompted a shutdown of factories and reduction in auto travel during the Olympics, was so harmful that Olympians needed masks on arrival was seen as a slap in the face to organizers.
“You never want to go to somebody else’s place and cause any embarrassment and in this case some of them did,” said USOC chairman Peter Ueberroth, who said the cyclists apologized without prompting from US Olympic officials.
“We’re not chastizing anybody. They came forward of their own volition.”
US cyclists wore the masks in the airport before even being exposed to the Beijing air over concerns that extra exposure to pollution might affect their breathing and therefore diminish their results in Olympic cycling events.
“It probably wasn’t the most opportune time for these athletes to wear these masks,” Scherr said. “They were overly cautious. Those athletes have written an apology to BOCOG.”
Scherr noted that fractions of seconds can decide the fate of the competitors involved and that each was simply looking for every possible edge by wearing the masks as a precaution.
“It wasn’t in the best judgment at the time,” he said. “We believe, hopefully, this will be the last incident of this kind.”
Steve Roush, the US Olympic chief of sport performance, met with the cyclists regarding their using the respiratory masks, which have an air filter within them. Any US governing body seeking masks were provided with them.
“It’s not a very fancy device,” Ueberroth said.
Roush also said air quality has improved every day in Beijing so far.
“The trend is the direction we wanted to see it go,” he said. “Clearly it’s a direction BOCOG and the IOC wanted to see.”
What bullshit. It’s a slap to the face? Are you sure? Because it’s not like pollution is an unknown problem there. And this is just a small part of the hypocritical politically-correct bullshitting going on there.

China: “HAHA HAY GUYS, PRETEND WE’RE FRIENDS OR WE’LL TAKE ALL YOUR LUNCH MONEY”

I wish there was some way I could effectively show my disgust with China. The only thing I can think of doing is just not watching the games, but that only really hurts me.

boycott chinese imported goods?

no that’s too much work, right

Maybe I could afford American Apparel tshirts if I didn’t spend so fucking much money on bikes made in Taiwan.

WTF?

Seriously, what the fucking fuck is going on in someone’s head when they apologize for attepting not to screw up their own lungs right when it matters most for them? Just because doing so makes a known problem a millionth of a percent more obvious than it already was (and it was pretty obvious)?

Apparently Gebre will do the 10k. Last I heard was he was provisionally selected for the team and they would decide in Beijing. But it seemed like he would probably not run. Of course if he wants to, he can I’m sure. He’s the boss after all. But then even if he does, beating Bekele and the other youngsters would be little short of a miracle. He would have been a favourite in the marathon.

Anyway, I’m happy right now: he apparently said he’s “too young to retire” and will probably run in London and after. That’s a helluva lot of opportunities for him to knock a few seconds/minutes off that 2:04:26.
Hicham retired, I need at lest one miracle runner left in my life.

NYTimes article has some better information on the air. They never should have apologized:

I hope they keep wearing the masks, are the only ones to wear the masks, wear them on the track, and then sweep up all the golds.

Hell yeah. I wouldn’t apologize. What can anyone do about it? This is just another way the American government (who probably did contact the Olympic Committee to ask the athletes to apologize) is turning a blind eye to the massive human rights and public health and pollution problems that China faces, but does nothing about. This is a country that has always had so many people that its governments have treated them like a commodity for centuries for their own monetary and political gain. While it’s debatable whether or not it’s America’s role to force China to do better on these fronts (I don’t think so), it is clear that we could be putting more pressure onto China to move in the right direction. Unfortunately, there’s too much money for Americans to make in China, and we’ve become too dependent on Chinese-made products to simply avoid them.

I have mixed feelings about the Olympics in Beijing. On the one hand, I feel like everybody just looked the other way and gave them the games so that they could get on their good side. On the other hand, it has brought a great deal of attention and scrutiny to some of China’s problems, which could increase pressure from much of the developed world. When these American athletes wore those masks, they made a statement to the rest of the world about the quality of the air in Beijing, even though they definitely only meant to protect their lungs. I wish the USOC had just said that they will allow their athletes to do what they want (within the rules, naturally) to protect their lungs at such a crucial time, and if the Chinese government is offended by that, they should have replied that they were offended that they did so little to protect the athletes who trained for years and traveled across the world to compete in their city. But they would never do that.

That proves it. PBK has everything I’ll ever need or want.

BOCOG sounds like the tarck version of Boss Hog. Like us tarckers are always just tryin to make our way, the only way we know how, but that’s just a little more then Bo Cog will allow.

This Olympics has all of the signs of a disaster in the making.
