So I bought one of those Wiggle Dyno wheels but don’t have a bike for it. Trying to decide if I want to start collecting parts to build up a fast and light dyno road bike or singlespeed. I don’t really need another mtb
That’s a bummer. The whole purpose of a $150 battery light is to put it on as many bikes as possible!
not your usual ixon mount:
sucks they don’t sell extras, but it’s easy enough to move between bikes.
Seems like where resonable, the Bates should stick to UK parts.
Middleburn cranks.
Royce hubs.
Hope Q/Rs.
I like TB14s, but I think something tubeless compatible would be nice. What color is the Bates? I think a hard-anodized A23 would look great with a mostly silver component mix.
If we’re going Ferg levels of balling out… Potenza is still that terrible powershift bullshit, right?
Buy Chorus or Record shakes, replace lever with Potenza silver lever with the label buffed out for full Campy glory (or whatever remains of it at this point.)
I’ve heard most current campy is bullshit. Just get etap.
Okay into the super weird bike build dithering thread with full intro.
So I have this Bates frame. I bought it around 2006, and Brian Bayliss had it for a repaint for close to a decade. I finally got it back after he passed when Joe Bell went through his estate; apparently he finished it right before he passed away.
I want to build it up with modern components. The rear is spread to 130 and it has canti studs. It has a regular English BB. I do not want any vintage components, except for maybe the seatpost if I can’t find something decent that fits. One cool thing is I slapped some wheels in there last night and I’m gonna be able to get a pretty enormous tire in this, probably up to 44 mm. I’ll most likely go with 32 mm though.
So far here are the options:
- All black
All SRAM E-Tap
Paul MiniMoto black
VO black stem, the one with the removeable face plate for 31.8 bars
Black seat post of some sort
Carbon fiber wheels with baby blue Onyx hubs (I already have these)
Black bars of some sort
- Black and silver
SRAM etap shafters, derailleurs
OX901d 48/32
Kinlin XR22T tubeless silver road rim
Paul MiniMoto silver
Onyx silver hubs
VO silver stem, the one with the removeable face plate for 31.8 bars
Compass Maes Parallel 31.8
Paul quick releases because they are pretty
Some sort of silver seatpost
- All the silver
Campagnolo Potenza
Kinlin XR22T tubeless silver road rim
Paul MiniMoto silver
Onyx silver hubs
VO silver stem, the one with the removeable face plate for 31.8 bars
Compass Maes Parallel 31.8
Paul quick releases because they are pretty
Some sort of silver seatpost
1.one
Sad fact, here. Post-2015 Campagnolo feels like absolute trash. Pre 2015 is still blissful Italian quirkiness with a vast catalog of inexpensive and interchangeable used parts.
Is silver 5800 or R7000 not silver enough? I ask because it’s definitely the most practical choice for a modern bike with silver shit. It’s not Ferg baller, but definitely an order an magnitude better than Potenza.
Regardless, if you end up going e-Tap, you’ll definitely need these.
Crabon rims for rim brakes are a bit silly atmo. I built a set of Kinlins once and they were trash.
This frame is fucking sweet. If it were mine I’d put as nice a mechanical Shimano group as I could on it with CX70 cantis. I forgot the frame has that giant cable stop in back, so mini Vs would be awkward.
White Industies T11 hubs to hard anno TB14 and some Compass skinwalls because skinwall + hard anno rims looks fucking sweet.
I’d do Ritchey Neoclassics and whatever decent silver post that doesn’t look like crap that fits. I’d run a placeholder stem(s) until I got the fit dialed, then have Eric build a proper one.
I agree that top of the line mech Shimnao with cx70s and some hard ano or silver low profile rims would be baller. Whats the seatpost diameter? VO setback would look nice on there. Whats the vibe for the build beyond baller and modern? Distance? Speed? Carrying stuff?
Gorgeous frame and so excited to see where you take it, regardless.
Well right now I have 2 bikes plus a trike if I get injured again:
- English with 26 mm max tires
- Jones with fat boys 55 mm
So I want to build something intermediate with like 32 mm tires.
As far as use, it’s my usual – two or three 20-40 mile rides during the week and up to 150 mile rides on the weekend. (When I say “usual” that was pre neck injury, right now that’s aspirational but it is looking like I can get back to it next year)
I do not need a dyno or anything because my exposure light and taillight are more than sufficient for the up to 4 hours I might be riding in the dark. I do not need racks and stuff; although I do the majority of my shopping by bike I just throw it in a backpack.
In a perfect world, I’d throw an NOS 9-speed Campagnolo Record group on it. But they are impossible to find now.
I guess I’m just asking–will all silver components with E-Tap derailleurs and shafters look super dumb.
Oh and the Kinlin rims – I need silver rims that are tubeless compatible if you have other suggestions.
I want the bike to be pretty but modern. One potential inspiration is this–where I got the Potenza inspiration:
It would bum me out to see the vestigial DT shifter bosses so my fergalicious build would be:
10 speed shimano DT shifters
11-36 silver cassette
Campy Pista cranks, 47/49 half step since this is a dumb fantasy
R7000 ders
CR720 brakes because they’re flawless
White hubs
Pacenti Brevet rims
No, they won’t look dumb. You could always have a set of campy brifters gutted & retrofitted with etap buttons where the shifty stuff used to be if you wanted a blend of black & silver all the way across the drivetrain.
I’d do etap (or campy retrofitted) with black tape, black(campy) or silver (etap) chairpost, and silver brakey things. I’d be tempted to paint the servo boxes on the derailers to match the frame (and if it was me I’d paint-match the absolutely necessary front rack to the frame as well) but black – if it’s glossy – wouldn’t conflict too badly.
Etap kits are on mega mark down. Im thinking crazy thoughts.
Machined or 3d printed housing for etap buttons which mount to DT bosses.
Blipbox hidden somewhere with modified blios in DT boss?
Are there etap time trial shifters that could be mounted to the DT?
Edit: I didn’t read the rest of the thread before replying…
