A headset recommendation question:
Thanks in part to a bad cheap shop install/a busted fork, my wonderful ACTION!-branded headset has gotten chewed up and I’m hesitant to re-install it on a nice new fork. It’s 1" threaded, with caged bearings top, needle bearings bottom.
The bike this is for (my beleaguered '87 Schwinn Cimarron, recently repainted neon pink->orange fade) originally came with a Tange G-Master double roller bearing headset, so I am inclined to either keep the Tange thing going or the roller bearing thing going.
My current frontrunners are either the IRD Technoglide for $65 or a Tange Falcon for $45, both cartridge bearing, the IRD better made but with ugly INTERLOC – SEALED CARTRIDGE BEARING white lettering, the Falcon nicely branded but perhaps less well made. Maybe it makes no difference? Maybe one of you knows a fun roller bearing headset that’s not $100?
Do it on a single speed, the last bit is so fun!

Not sure what’s chewed up, but you can use the top from one with the bottom of another (race, bearing, and cup from each must match eachother). If you have salvageable needle bottom, you could mix it with a cartridge top, etc.

looks like the branding is only white on the black IRD; acetone may remove it or you could possibly use one of the metal finishes?

I’m gonna try acetone on the IRD! And I am resisting buying a spare old sorta-sealed bearing old STX or Deore XT headset off ebay to have around.
Ok so let’s say I have a spare road disc frameset, rear is 12x142 TA.
custom frame, so I kinda want to keep it around. Assuming I can get the very very stuck seatpost out of it (pause now! grease your seatposts, be a Gallant, not a Goofus like me!), is this a good foundation for a fun project:
and to make sure I’m not missing something, the trick is getting a front chainring on a chainline of about 52mm? I last set up a single speed bike in 2004, so I’m a little rusty on the details here

What is the existing BB on the frame? A bushnell might not fit. Although there are plenty of other options.

68mm english thread. it looks like there are options, i’m only doing this if there are supported components from current manufacturers.
edit: and if I’m willing to have a new bb shell / EBB clamp put in the frame - looks like most of what’s available ready-to-install is press fit. Makes sense, more space to work in, but not what I have .
There are eccentric BBs for BSA threaded shells. This one is for a 24mm spindle’d crank.
Looks like it has a 6mm adjustment range, and comes with a 7/8/9 half-link.
I know there is at least one other on the market but can’t recall the manufacturer.

The other option is to trust in tarckbear and go for a magic gear. Which has a certain fun element of fate just choosing your ratio choices. (and/or hunting down oddball chainring tooth counts).
I have done this successfully on two different frames and it was fine!

Phil Wood had one, the problem with these designs is the eccentric is clamping a threaded part, so break out the Loctite.

yeah if I were bettter at trigonometry (?) or general chain science (??) I might bolder about magic gear hunting
