I was surprised to find the difference between my carbon SID and my non-carbon SID was so small. True that the carbon still has the canti posts. Tempted to swap the black one on my Ocoee for this silver one, as the black one has no lock-out, just lots of air. I think the black looks better tho.
If I understand correctly, carpet fibre is really good at being strong in certain directions and so folks lay it up in layers according to where those loads are happening.
But for stuff like fork crowns (and stems), the loads are pretty much coming from all directions and so carbon doesn’t have as much of an advantage over aluminum.
an overview of carbon stem development I read a few months back described the material as “black aluminum” because of exactly that problem - loads coming from everywhere, so the material has to be strong everywhere, so you wind up with a massive weight savings of like, ten grams over actual alu.
The word here is “anisotropic” which is what carbon fiber is, that is, it has different material properties in different directions. “Isotropic” is what aluminum is.
Other than that, I’m going to avoid writing wall-of-text diatribe on the subject.
Basically. Though I’ve seen lighter stems in aluminum than in carbon. I do have a carbon stem, but the one I have has been well engineered and offers greater stiffness than similar weight aluminum ones.
If I didn’t mind noodly stems, I’d feel safer on an ultralight aluminum one over a carbon one.

I’m pretty sure the delta of the levers is minimal @EndpointBraden recommend whatever for the shifters, but the rear derailleur was the place to spend the dosh.

Is there anything on the market with direct mount brake bosses at that higher location to use the extra cm of reach? Are there even any center-mount TT frames or forks that use medium reach calipers?
Isn’t short reach considered 39-49? This is just short reach+. If the design allows for it, why not?
Don’t want to rule out someone putting it on their Trek Pilot to go with their clip on aerobars.

That amount of reach is more often needed for compatibility reasons with rear undermounted brakes. I’m not familiar with any rim brake bikes that would be able to take full advantage of that reach for tire clearance reasons, as usually even with our brakes with allow for relatively big road tires, the brake is still the limiter as opposed to the fork.

I already bought the VO brakes which have significantly more lateral fender clearance, will have to see how things fit together in practice
the rollercam arm geometry would be fine with the fender tukt against it, and could have a rack directly mounted to the pivot bosses in place of the fairing

Winter bike dither. Super secret prototype VO mtb, gooooold fork courtesy of @plop and mishmash of mostly used parts courtesy of me. Still needs a seatpost collar, tubes, a saddle, and a million other things I’m sure but it’s damn close. Gears in the spring so I can actually ride it as a mtb and not as a snow commuter.
