Weird Build Dithering Thread Infinity: Part 2

There’s also some dude in italy who made/makes them almost like a side hobby. I bought one for a straight 9/8" bike and got 1.5°, he would ask for your head tube measurement to get the angles correct.

The one I got was OK, the machining looked good but one of the bearings fit too loose in the cup and I had to shim it a bit around the edge.

Is your bike rigid or full-squish? I also bought a set of offset bushings for the rear shock to get some more slackness, I still have them somewhere if you’d like em.

Thanks for the offer, but I meant to type “retrogrouch gravel bike” - It’s going to be Soma Double Cross Disc, with 71.5° ht angle.

That’s a great find, I think 1.5° would be even better than the 1° I was looking at. I’m planning 650bx2.1ish so that would be ~80mm trail. Right up there with more modern progressive gravel bikes, but in a dead-ender steel QR frameset I like.

I put out an APB last night for a new chasis for my bent B-17 and within a couple of hours I had 3 potential donors. 2 from my neighbor! Ha ha. That’s the new one on the left. Strangely the steel rivets were easier to drill out of the donor saddle than the copper ones in the original. I might look at bolts rather than rivets as they will be a PITA to get here, try to copy the Berthoud thingo as someone kindly suggested. I better get the neighbor some craft beers… Might get some for myself while I’m there…

I wonder if Brooks ever thought to replace the front part of these things with something made of alloy? Man those parts are heavy.

Use a piece of angle stock to mark a centerline on your head tube, tape and pen/pencil is good if you don’t want to mark the painted surface. You’ll 100% get them aligned with each other, but I can’t promise they’ll be perfectly straight.

this is my fave twitter account

One of mine as well

Bike shop had a cool stem in the parts bin so I bought it for the Nishiki I built up to sell. Guess I’m not selling it. Replaced the cool stem already on it with new cooler stem. Going to put a wald basket on it and keep it in the basement at work so I always have a bike downtown. Probably going to want a better crank on that bike now so might as well start looking for a new crank for Marino bike so nishiki can get the hand-me-down.

I broke my gravel frame a few weeks ago and have been dithering about getting BMC monstercross canti - only thing I noticed was the 130mm rear. I know we’re still pandemic boom limited stock era, but how dead is this standard? I haven’t seen a tubeless 130mm wheel in years.

it’s real dead jim

if it’s for dirt, it’s 135qr or more likely 142TA. if it’s road bike it probably has discs and is 142TA anyway because 2022

It’s pretty dead, but if you lace up your own wheels who cares?

So I’m running into clearance issues with rear brake, tire, and fender. Also regular short reach calipers are like 5mm too short and too narrow for modern rim, and long reach boys are like 5mm too long.

Need caliper with:
Big tire/fender clearance
Mid-short reach? 55mm? I suck at measuring reach.
Wide rim compatability

Basically, what Shimano or Tektro caliper do I need to find on ebay?

Or do I just say fuck it and get cemterpulls or some other weird shit?

Tektro 539 or 559

Modern 105/ultegra (7100/8100) probably

Okay, so Elephant offered to fix my frame (rust damage shown here) BUT I kinda still want to go to a Hunter-Gatherer for a bit more tire/mud clearance and modern stuff (thru axles mostly). Tell me if this makes sense or if I’m just lighting money on fire for the sake of it here.

  • Buy HG frame to replace Elephant as my dirt/off-road touring/light singletrack/“bikepacking” bike
  • Have Elephant fixed and replace old Bridgestone as my basketbike/commuter/rain bike
  • Buy Clydesdale fork and put on Bridgestone as cargo/grocery bike
