I am going to drop these thoughts here because if I leave them here maybe I won’t think about them again:
I’ve been riding three different but similar drivetrains lately.
There’s my touring bike from the '80s, with a 3x7 but it uses a half-step triple. Granny gear is a 28, then it’s a 44, and a 50. The cassette at the back is a 7-speed 12-32. Works great, love it.
There’s my mountain bike from the '90s, which I switched to a 2x10. I took off the granny gear on an old Shimano 94bcd triple, so it’s a 42-34 up front and an 11-40 out back. Works great, I love it.
There’s my mountain bike from the '80s, which I cobbled into a drop bar 3x7 by switching the front shifting to 8 speed campy ergopower and a mid-cage campy RD. Front shifting is biopace 28-48-48, rear is shimano 12-32 7 speed, made possible because it’s the same spacing as campy 8. Most of everything is fine in the 38, but I’m shifting more than I’d like.
The right thing to do would be to just … buy new chainrings so that the triple has more me-appropriate gearing. I could save some money just doing a 28-44 double and calling it a day.
The warped thing to do would be to go 2x10 with a M781-GS RD I got on the cheap. it turns out that 10-speed shimano mountain uses just about the same shifter pull as 6-speed shimano AND 8-speed campy. Total capacity on that derailleur is 35t, and even keeping within Shimano’s spec would make things very easy for me if I did an 11-32 rear and 42-28 up front. Same story with 11-34 rear and 42-30 front.
None of this really makes any sense practically at all, but if I am really catastrophically bored one of these days, I’ll take the Campy RD off the '80s mountain bike, throw on the 10 speed dangler and my 10 speed wheel to see if it indexes thru the first 8 gears and if I can sorta over-push the lever to friction my way into the final two. It’s either that or I call Rivendell and see if they’re interested in making six-speed brifters.

You should do this and when they say no ask them if they’re interested in making shakes instead. Also make one of them triples a 1x so you’ve got the three most common flavors of drivetrain, and then write a blerg post so I can read the online-tears of Midwestern dads complaining that you’re not sticking to cars.

Hmmmmm, someone has been selling one near me for $40 for ages. I remember reading somewhere these are terrible to use, but maybe it’s worth a lil experiment …
I guess this is how the ratios work out, assuming it’s using 3.2 for Campy new 9 and Shimano 6? No clue how Campy 8 (3.5) works out, unless it’s actually close enough
I bought a pair on the internet for $40 in 2000 or 2001, their website still had prices in deutchmarks after the euro transition
unfortunately the nerdy partsbin Trek I bought on rec.bicycles.tech had DT shifters for Campy 8sp, the deepest pit of incompatibility
The shifting action was super stiff in the hand with long throw to the levers, and I never mounted them

Dithering future retrogrouch bike, anyone have experience with this type of angleset? Is this just what they’re all like? I don’t think there’s anything else for straight 9/8ht?
1° is enough to get my bike into the low 70s for trail, would be a big improvement.

Design makes me think I’m going to be plagued by negative thoughts re:steering weirdness due to (imaginary) slightly off install between top/bottom cups.
Wolftooth and previously cane creek had angled headsets
Don’t think I’ve seen a 9/8 version
