Weird Build Dithering Thread Infinity: Part 2

Honestly think I’ll only be done dithering when I die or magically use all the parts in my hoard (and cancel all my cards so I don’t buy more).

After spending a short period of time trying to see how easy it’d be to make a sensible 8-of-10 cassette (replace the 11 and 13 cogs with a 12t, leave off the 40t, and end up with a 12-37), I have also locked my brain on another stupid possible compatibility – shimano 11 speed road has the same RD cable pull ratio as Elder Campy 8 and 9 of 1.4. I could throw a R7000 on the back of this bike and keep the same 7-speed 11-32 cassette. Why? There is no good reason! Spares would be cheaper than replacing this mirage derailleur should it get caught on a rock, but I think that’s all. Still, I’m tempted and if I spot one local for cheap, I’ll give it a try for science.

On vacation thinking of ways I should spend money I don’t have while my partner is getting ready but I think I want a Rodeo Labs fork on my RLT. Kind of tired of switching between stock QR fork with no mounts and H/G fork. $300 for a cosmetic defect fork seems okay to me if I have any money left when I get home.

Also the steerer on the 1” threadless carbon fork I paid $60 for for my road bike ended up being a few mm to short. Maybe a stem with less stack would work but I kind of doubt it…not sure if I want to find another cheap carbon fork or go a different direction and buy a champs-elysees and put a rack on it. Or p-clamps on the surly fork on it now. That is all.

I think @halbritt just posted a 1" crabon fork in the search the hoard thread

Threaded I think

Yup, threaded. Could be threadless for a tiny person, maybe.

Trim the headtube the few MM needed to make it long enough again, or find a stem with a shorter clamp section? (What I did in that situation – before I started building frames – was to cut a section of steertube from a overly long fork and use it to support the upper part of the clamp, then trust in physics and carbon seize compound that the lower clamp bolt would keep me from dying. It worked for me™, but you might have a higher regard for your shoulderblades than I seem to have.)

so an upper piece just there to keep the stem from over-clamping where there would be no steerer?

Yup

If I had another 1” carbon fork in the hoard I’d try it. Maybe with a 1 1/8 stem and a shim to there’s a sleeve around the two steerers for a little more support?

ooh that sounds like a slightly less sketchy and maybe slightly more creaky way to approach it

Digging the mock up feel so far. Kind of a goofy look, but it’s making my hands happy. Been fighting numb hands for a few months so trying out some weird stuff.

You aren’t that wrong. It’s a twitchy twisty thing.

I’m in my even year cycle of thinking “I should dither together an upright bike”, step-thru edition this time around, and then discover that these are going on presale tomorrow. That purple would be pretty great.

dithering is more fun
