I’ve used both travel agents and mini-vees and I think the travel agents might be better. a bit more fiddly to set up but more tire clearance and options of vees
The third option is a set of V-brake specific drop bar levers (Tektro RL-520 or Cane Creek equivalent) and bar-end or downtuber shifters.
thanks this is very helpful
#teamroli!
Is that a 16”? My boy, Teddy, just turned 5 and is already 48” tall. I regret getting him a 16”, he could be on a 20”. It’s a specialized Jett though and it’s real nice.
The only downside to mini vees is if you want to run tires that are too fat. Probably over 40 mm at a guess. Ive used them, and the travel agents. Both good options.
Yeah it’s a 16”. Roli is currently 42” and I regret buying the 14” woom at the beginning of summer because he’s fully grown out of it. The 16” Cleary is like 2x the weight of the 14” woom.
We got a lot of use out of our 14” Guardian bike, but mostly in balance mode. By the time we got to pedals we had to raise the seat so much it was a clown bike. I do wish we had sprung for the woom 14” as the guardian was so heavy it took us back a few steps in balance mode.
The specialized is a touch lighter than the guardian but not as light as a woom, but now that he’s bigger/stronger it’s less of an issue. Just got to decide if I want to do geared or SS this spring for a 20”…
Here’s some v-brake info that folks may find useful:
swapped out the jones bars for these crust x Ron monstrosities and so far I’m digging em. Need to chop the sternum puncher and this bike might be in its post-dither era
That bike rules but there’s no such thing as post-dither
Got tired of failing to get my 3x1 bar-end shifting properly up front with a 22/34/46 and decided, fuck it, will go back to shifting with my toe, and replace the 46 with a 44, in the 34’s middle position. So just for testing I put the 34 on the outside. Bugger me if it doesnt shift really well now… 22/44/34.

Lmao this is some spirit of Sheldon business
No shift with stick? Ban.
Well, toe shifting is way cooler than stick-ways, which was what I had decided on, but after it worked so well on all 3 rings I thought fukk it, will just leave it. The outside 32 was just there, while I checked that the 44 had clearance from the stay, and I was intending to take it off and put on actual spacers, but WTH, it can stay, messes with your head.
I didn’t actually doubt you, I was just tarck meme shitposting!
You know, like that Life of Brian scene. “C’mon, haggle!”
do you think they’d work for 35mm gravel kings?
I believe mine are over 38 gravelking slicks + vo fenders so I don’t see why not.
