that sucks
Yeah, rolled the same tires for a while, only flatted out once, but switching to GP4Ks felt like putting a coat of glue that never wears out on my tires.
Shimano 9 speed bar end shifters (35 bucks, goodbye downtube shifters!)
Nitto Moustache bars
Nashbar Trekking bars (if you gotta do a lot of road miles on a MTB, these are the way to go.)
Inova Studded tires (if I needed these more than 5-10 times a year I’d spend a bit more money, but these are perfect for me)
CXP 22s.

Yes, yes, and yes.
I’m also super fond of Midges when they’re jacked up really high.
My Salsa Bell Laps on my Cross Check are awesome too.
But bars are something that certain people love and certain people hate.
I’ve always liked Tiagra stuff for a durability/quality/pricepoint combo, but I’m also a commuter more than a racer. It’s also nice to have stuff that’s cheap to replace when I run it into a signpost.
Anyone used the Origin8 Gary bars? I’m wondering how they compare to bell laps, midges, and other dirt drops.
Never even seen them in real life, let alone used them. Supposedly they’re like a cross between a Midge and a mustache bar, so I guess I would like them.
This thread convinced me to buy a set of CXP double deuces.
Thanks, tarck bike!
they are seriously underrated rims. i beat the hell out of mine and truing them once every few months takes all of 5 minutes.
probably not the best, but I’m sure fucking glad I had it today: the soma rain shell. My mom bought it for me last year and I’ve never had the chance to really use it. Within 200 meters on the bike my legs were soaked to the bone today but I took off my shell and was completely dry. Now I just need something for my legs!
My experience with CXP22’s was that they developed large cracks on the rear wheel after about 8,000 to 9,000 miles, which sucks pretty hard. I suspect a shitty mechanic overtensioning the spokes however. I probably would buy a wheel built with them again but have a good mechanic that knows wheelbuilding look them over.
This guy’s been pretty good to me:

^ - The little arm on the back of mine broke off. I’ve been meaning to contact Park about a replacement, but otherwise I love mine.
8-9k miles on a set of rims that were improperly tensioned? That doesn’t suck pretty hard. That only just kinda sucks a little bit. If they’d cracked after 80-90 miles, that could be defined as hard suckage.
I like CXP33s more, but that’s just me.
dbl post. doh!
Oh yeah, workstands! Seriously the best bike purchase you could ever make. I have a park bench mount one and Brian (yep bikeforums brian) gave me a portable one that I can use anywhere, anytime. Can’t remember the brand, but it’s nifty.
I use the portable one a lot when my wife gets a crappy movie or something. I bring the stand and my tool box inside and “watch” the movie with her. I get to work on bikes and I get bonus points for spending time with my wife instead of hiding in the garage. Hooray portable bike stands!
