wheel building / discussion thread

Alloy nipples are fine as long as the threads are fully engaged, which they should be anyway

It isn’t 1992 anymore, alloy nipples ain’t self destructing all over

Just don’t get black brass, that shit practically rubs off when you touch a wrench to it

the black on the brass sapims (to archetypes) on my last set held up ok during the build. they haven’t required any touch-up truing in 2,000mi since, that’s why i was considering alloy, even though those were road-only wheels. then again, i have a set of wheels in the garage that are nearly unrideable due to rounded alloy nipples.

i get bro prices from Q but they currently only have archetypes in 28H. i’m 180lbs, gonna die off road w/o 32s? 3x is strongest yes?

They’re fine? Nah. The problem with aluminum nipples is not assembly, which ain’t that big of a deal if done with some care. The problem is the galling that occurs once the aluminum develops an oxide layer. Can make truing difficult. Stainless and brass is less prone to galling, especially if you use zinc anti-seize.

As for black brass nipples, I don’t seem to have a problem with 'em.

I accidentally built a wheel with alloy nips recently. In the process of bringing it up to (according to me) sufficient tension I cracked or completely destroyed 5 nipples.

Wow, a brass vs alloy nipple debate. Priceless.

Pick a side or GTFO.

Pick a side?

Alloy is fine if you aren’t a hamfisted moron. The reasons why they are fine have been broadcasted elsewhere so many times, but I’ll sum it up nicely here.

Grease in between the nipple and the rim
Anti-seize compound on the threads
A 4 sided spoke wrench
Spokes that are long enough to engage all the threads like they should in any wheel build
Alloy with eyelets aren’t recommended

so, nipples aside, is 28H 3x a stupid idea for a mixed-use bike?

It should be fine. Just don’t use noodle spokes.

Most problems with alloy nipples are due to operator error. Prep things properly and use a decent spoke wrench.

Yeah, pretty much.

built this today. sadly still waiting on a box of spokes for the rear. 350s to archetypes via aerolites, aerocomp on the rear ds. somewhat heavier but 1000x better in every other way than the neuvations they’re be replacing.

gonna make my bike look sooooo much better. really antsy to finish the rear so i can guysshoe/undo the wheel mullet.

Damn, looks sexy!

Whoa.

nice. probably not much heavier at the rim, if any.

rode it and holy shit, wheel is stiff as fuck compared to the spaghettiohs i’m used to. feels good man. even more stoked to build up the rear.

Looks sharp.

That is indeed a sexy wheel.

dq: what fancy skewers should i get?

Ultegra?
