wheel building / discussion thread

Recommend a set for my rigid MTB that won’t get pulled apart and break multiple spokes when climbing up 15-18% grade with a full backpack, so over 300 pounds. (Yes, this happened to me the other day.)

On the MTB I had to go Kings hubs. Anything else I could potentially use that’s cheaper / less theft worthy?

Not fancy, but good.

XT? I obviously don’t have experience being a big dude, but whenever someone has needed a strong wheel, I’ve built a 36-spoke Rhynolite. I’ve heard really good things about the A719, too, but I’ve never used them myself.

Are we talking disc or rim brake? If disc, you could always get some burly DH rims.

Disc. I think some all-mountain will work, it’s not going to see the abuse of my FS bike.

At h&f we had decent luck with Dt swiss rims and wtb freq for cheaper.

I don’t have much of a suggestion on hubs beyond being happy with my Dt 340 in the rear. But I’m not putting that much stress on my shit, and the bigger dudes at the shop were all walking uphill. I do believe in that star ratchet system tho

Remember that dude that killed a woman bombing down Castro? I live on the top of that fucking hill. Haha.

I’ve made it a personal goal to ‘clear’ it on the climb up without stopping, and that means lots of grinding, or standing. 29ers are known to have more torque in low gears than most hubs can handle for clydes, so it’s a real thing.

The Bontrager wheels that came with my Sawyer were fine for flat commuting, but they’re not gonna last now.

Xt?[/quote]
LX from a couple of years ago. Their steel axles are stronger than the XT.

but neither of those freehubs are gonna withstand 300lb mashing. DT or King.

Shimano makes 29er specific hubs to handle the extra torque from larger cassette and they bigger wheel.

Phil Wood? Weight shouldn’t be an issue compared to 300lbs. The SS driver + 4 pawl setup shouldn’t explode.

…and they’re about $300 cheaper than anything else mentioned.

I had a 36h Rhyno Lite. Guess I probably still do, somewhere. That fucker is indestructible.

parts for wheels are on trucks headed to my door today. will update tonight.

So, these, huh? GREAT find.

I have shitty-ass noisy Juicy 3 brakes. For that cost break, I could also grab SLX disc brakes and dial it out completely.

I built one of these for a project. Very nice hub for the price.

Yeah I have one that I just built up as well. Still haven’t ridden it yet though.

How many instagrams do those wheels weigh, bro?

I don’t have an instagram scale, bro.

bwaaahaha

Hadley or CK hub
