What I knows is that the less teeth, the more reliable it’ll be. The really fancy ones skip and wear out.
36t seems rather cromulent. never had a problem with thousands of all weather miles
54 for CX, XC, and single speed.
36 for the rest.
i’ve never heard of the 36 going sour but i have heard talk of the 54 developing skips
54 is definitely a wear part and I would never suggest to anyone on a bike with more than 120mm of travel or the desire to huck more than 180lbs of meat to flat.
Im a fan of the 36. Seen may chipped/broken 54. This guy is 170 ish pounds but he’s a very strong rider and wants reliable.
i only ride the big click upgrade bc somebody wanted to trade me for my stock ones
road bike i like the standard 18t
18 to 36 is a meaningful jump up. good enough for me to not really notice but it’s just on my ditherer
