The complaints about the Omnium are perfectly reasonable. Anything that causes the steering mechanism to break is a bad thing, even if it happens when the machine is stopped and you’re trying to lock it to something – and, yes, I can think of half a dozen things that could be done to mitigate that issue but if you’re throwing down $1500 for a frameset it would be really nice if that had already been tested and corrected.
Will Splendid not sell just a frameset? I imagine, its too complicated for most folx, and that’s why their kit sets are popular.
Yuba tried tackling this with double cables - two per side of discs fixed to the steerer and the fork. That way even if one snaps, you’ll have (soft) steering enough to not just die. I like the idea more than rods, though having to dial in your steering tension feels a little more nautical than I’m used to for bikes.
Have you had to mess with the steering cables at all?
Have Ferg hire some shippers
And Boise folx get this
I have a weakness for cable steering because it can be routed inside the frame instead of just hanging down under the frame picking up tumbleweeds, plastic bags, and whatever else is sucked up by turbulence. But even a rod-connected drivetrain shouldn’t just break if the front wheel flops to one side or another.
I’d consider it possibly.
Yeah- I’d say it’s really cool looking but I’d bet it falls real short as a proper cargo whip (most of my experience is riding a bullitt).
Its not that theres only one answer to what cargo bike is the only cargo bike, its that theres one answer to whether or not the omnium is a well and good cargo bike.
So, with the experience of 2 possibly 3 people on Tarck the omnium is “fine, but”
And the but is that really heavy loads are awkward and unwieldy
We had Cameron Falconer weld on a steering stop after that little incident. Just a chunk of metal that would catch the crown of the fork before it rotated past dead center.
I’m curious, but not curious enough to spend the money to find out. That’s the crux of the problem. The bullitt is tested and approved by quite a few folx, whereas I think @panda_heavy_metal is the only one with an omnium, which he seems to like OK.
Nope, I’ve got a Spicy Curry, which I (and my kids) love.
Baby I know
They were out of the model I wanted.
@Straws the Yuba has a steer limiter too, keeps things from getting too floppy.
One of you OZ weirdos had one I thought.
IIRC Jeff had/has one. @kevinwulf u out there still?
aha:
Better, omnomnomium with wheel-less kid trailer on the platform
You can buy a Bullitt frameset too. Splendid sells them for $2400 I think (they’re about 1700 EUR over here iirc)
I mean everything is “fine, but…” Lifting a huge longjohn up a few stairs into my house is not great, having to do five point turns to get it turned around is kind of embarrassing (not helped by my kid making backup warning beeps as I do it). Cycletruck is fine for a bag of groceries, but imposes a hard limit on what you can carry and isn’t as snappy to ride as a normal bike.
If your sweet spot for cargo capacity and portability is right between those options, then a MiniMax is probably perfect.
Feature not a bug
