Yeah, noisy bikes are the worst. What I’m thinking right now is the bottom of the crate sandwiched by spacers on the underside and fender washers on top with the spacers sized to pull the bottom down a little, as a treat. There’s about 15mm of space between the platform and crate to fill.

I’m working on some fenders for cargo bikes because I get a lot of emails asking for VO to make these. They’ll likely be 60mm wide front and rear. Any additional suggestions are welcome because I don’t know much about cargo bikes.

I ended up using a 650b x 60mm fender on my rear 26" x 60mm tire because it gave me a little extra clearance vs a fender designed around a 26" wheel.
Might make more sense to do 650b and market it as also working with 26" as well with a little extra clearance.
VO fenders re-radius much better than the very stiff Planet Bike ALX which I have.

I think nominal 26x20 tire size is probably the best bet. Cargo bikes are sort of the last holdouts for that wheel since when you’re running a 2.3" tire 559 or 584 is not much difference at all. Also I’d chance a slightly wider fender, there’s some big bois out there, and someone with a 650b can have a little more space to reprofile the big one.

Speaking from a position of absolutely zero authority, other than owning a 26"/20" cargo bike that came with fenders, it seems like 26"/20" has a better chance to fit everything from old MTBs with clydesdale forks to folx wanting better fenders for a Yuba. Normies probably just want to buy the same size fender as their tires and don’t know anything about reradiusing.

Gonna miss out on that lucrative Omnium market tho… but it looks like those already come with fenders now that I look.

I’m also thinking stainless steel as the fender material since these bikes are basically meant to be beaten up and what’s another 7 ounces over the weight of the bike?

60mm seems narrow. Atmo if you do 60mm, do ā€œ650bā€, knowing that it will then fit a fattier 26" tire though won’t have as much width coverage.

IME 60mm over 2.35 tires is borderline too tight. (This was using VO fenders years ago over 26x2.35 Schwalbe Super Motos which were true to size.). With a knobbier tire, more girthy tire, or less careful set up, there would be problems.

My Zaskar city bike actually has Specialized plastic 650b fenders over 26X2.35 tires and they are great overall radius but should be wider.

I think 60mm is good for old steel MTBs because that’s often about as wide as will fit, but surely cargo bikes must come stock with more clearance?

I already bought a 20" fender from Planet Bike, but matching stainless fenders at the VO price point would be sweet.

FYI, it’s hard to re-radius a plastic fender from 26" to 20".

I have the same reaction to these fender/tire fitments as I do wide rubber on a track car or thick thighs stuffed into tiny shorts

As for reg bikes, we’re already working on 82mm wide fenders. I’ll keep those setups in mind for wider tires and cargo bikes. FWIW, if you have more vertical clearance, you can get a tighter fit more safely. Which most of the cargo bikes seem to have. That is, if the seatstay and chainstay bridges were 2cm further out, you’d have a lot more breathing room for the fender and tire combo.

In my limited experience, 60mm is great for the 20" tire, since most of the tires you get are 2-inchers anyway. The front fender on the extracycle is great only it’s about 10 inches too short. I’ll measure when I get home: I think it’s a 75 or 80mm width.

but then in Stainless it’s ridiculously tough to massage or re-radius, and more likely to crack if you drill it for a bridge

yes you definitely need to label it ā€œ26+20ā€

but the actual sizing could be a little generous

Oh right, all those Yubas I was thinking of are 20" rears which is a different fender than a 20" front.

@igor is this more or less work than selling separate fronts and rears of 26" and 20" fenders?

Maybe @igor could run a dating service for edgerunnner/20" back tires folx and Long John 20" front tire folx and everyone gets what they want.

It’s much easier, cheaper, and faster to do everything based off existing fenders, rather than coming up and investing in new rollers and dies.

I haven’t seen any stainless steel fender crack, and the radius is pretty spot-on for most 26" normal width bikes. I think a thicker gauge of aluminum would actually be more brittle after re-radiusing and would be similarly as heavy as stainless without the dent resist properties.
