You're gunna hurt yourself: Carry Shit Olympics (aka the Cargo Bike thread)

Those rolling papers look gross, dude.

Those are the cause of like 98% of my flats. Little fuckers.

Since weight is not a concern at all on the eLorry, I figured why not go belt and suspenders with sealant and thorn resistant tubes. Turns out all the 20" thorn resistant tubes I found were Schrader only. I think I’d rather risk a flat than deal with a Schrader valve.*

* Opinion subject to change

schraeder valves are pretty bomb proof, as evidenced by their ubiquity in industry, they have a big fat tube to squirt sealant in without clogging, and they work great

also there are only two specific TR tubes i trust. one is from j&b and i think it’s the reg, not utili-t tube (can confirm next time i’m at a work computer) and one from maxxis. all others shear at the valve IME. not sure about good 20ā€ TR tubes though. source: have purchased and overseen installation of thousands of them

I just don’t like dealing with Schraders on bikes. Last one I had on the Katu got messed up after I removed and reinstalled the core and it wouldn’t thread all the way in, and I can’t ever seem to get the pump head installed without letting out a bunch of air.

give em another try. i’ve removed and reinstalled cores on hundreds of tubes with no issues and generally only lose air trying to get a pump on with presta

The only good Schrader valves are ones with threaded valves.

On the subject of anti-Schrader sentiment;

I was pumping up the rear tire on my Big Dummy a couple weeks ago, got the pump head on at a bad angle, and bent the little threaded stem bit on my presta valve. Bent it back a little, Seems Fine. A couple weeks later I try to bend it a little more and it just snaps off. Normally not a problem, grab a core from a roached tube and be on my way, but no. Had to do a full tube swap because Surly specd the cheapest possible Cheng Shin tube and it didn’t even have a removable core.

This is the only time I will both relent in my Surly apologism and say that a Schrader valve would have been better.

Babby incoming has provided clearance for cargo bike. Does tarck have opinions on bullit vs. triobike? Triobike seems legit construction wise and is fewer $$ in my part of prison island. Obv best strat is buy 2nd hand bike nerd build bullit but competition for used cargo bikes runs high right now…

The only triobike I’ve seen IRL was a 3 wheel thing and it was pretty meh.

Bullitt is still the best bike money I’ve spent.

I don’t go easy on it at all - singletrack, gravel, forest roads, hopping curbs, etc and in the 5 years I’ve owned it the only thing I’ve broken is a spring on the kickstand.

Bullitt, with the caveat that they’re not ideal for tall people (like a Larry vs Harry rep talked me out of buying one because I’m 6’6")

yep

Agreed on the Bullitt love.

Get the bullitt you will not disappoint yourself nor your internet friends

Melbourne? Once stage 4 lifts maybe go to cargocycles and check out a triobike in person.
If you’re on the prison island obscure fixie forum maybe put a request in there, see if anyone knows anyone selling a Bullitt.
I’ll ask my bikedad chatgrüppe if anyone knows of any too.

Yes, melbourne. Thanks everyone, will try ride a trio longjohn in person and report back.

a cursory glance suggests that the two are similar. i haven’t looked at geo (nor do i actually understand it for bigfiets but the trip cargo looks a lot like a bullitt. bullitt is the best cargo bike i’ve been on- fully comfortable doing running cross mounts while carrying a significant amount (30+ lbs). great bike

Yeah, that is my thought as well, they look pretty similar in basic principles. Have ridden bullits, so if the trio is up to scratch as a cheaper equivalent then will be good to have options.

Very interested to see how you fit.

Little hip pack is little. It fits the bare necessities and not much more. Plus it feels dorky worn around my shoulder, like I’m trying to pretend it’s not really a butt bag. Gonna go back to the little daypack with spares inside since it’s a better place to hang a helmet when off the bike and has the ability to carry other stuff too.

I don’t! I was ready to order one, and the LvH rep basically told me that I’d have a bad time riding one.

I got a Supermarche instead, which I’m sort of recalling has a slighly longer rider section. It also has a step-through frame, which rules for cargo.
