this is just like bikes in traffic - more kids walking makes each of their odds of surviving the gauntlet better.
Shit kids these days are scaredy cats back in the 90s we just got shot or stabbed and just kept walking.
FR though my kid is a shithead and misses the bus all the time. I think it’s time for him to start walking.
This is literally how we get 15 and 16 year old drivers, something that also feels completely insane now!
I walked to school or took the bus even in Nebraska. When I was in like 4th or 5th grade we’d walk home, and it looks now like that was about 0.8 miles? The elementary schools near our current house are either 0.5 miles (not great school) or 1.1 miles (better school) so either are walkable or bikeable with dad.
I’d like to think I’d be a “free range kid” sorta dad but honestly there are a couple intersections and bus stops near my house that I would feel uneasy about letting a kid navigate on their own (and I feel like my wife will have much stronger feelings about this). It sucks, #BanCars
be a shame if someone started losing bags of nails and construction screws on that street off the back of their cargo bike on a regular basis
careful, if Karen see’s your kid walking to school alone in the rain she gonna call the cops and the cps.
Luckily it’s a more working class neighborhood and there’s a large Central American immigrant community of kids who walk to the local middle school and he’s middle school sized anyways. The problem is more the school figuring it out but I drop him off a block up the road anyways and they haven’t said anything.
Yeah, 20 is plenty, enforced with cameras, everywhere that is not a highway.
and change whatever needs to be changed in the driving laws so that automated ticketing via camera is not contestable, if you own the car and it was speeding you get the ticket. think of the revenue!
no license plates on the car? automated spike strip dispensers.
it must be so difficult to drive that in this city
I hope it makes him miserable.
hello fellow native nebraskan
i don’t recall walking to school often but by 5th grade i was riding my bike by myself to school, about a mile each way. then i got my grandfather’s car when i was 16 and started driving everywhere.
in retrospect it’s completely nuts how much we drove to get around town. the whole town was 2 miles across! you could get anywhere in town in under 10 minutes on a bike
I grew up in Lincoln so there was a bit more sprawl to navigate but I hear you lol. Small towns should be bicycle havens but aren’t.
incredible vibe shift at my alma mater, this sucks
Yeah, the more time we spend at this school, the less I like it. The classroom stuff is great but the general culture (and demographic) if far more Andersonville than Rogers Park, if you know what I mean.
The huge truck was pulling out as we were rolling in and I said “oh, look at the big man in his big truck!” before I noticed that he had his window open. Oops. Hope he doesn’t murder me.
i do this shit all the time and my wife gets so upset. brenner and i call them “man trucks” and i loudly talk about how if i were a real man i would have a big truck. i have not yet been punched but i’m sure it’s coming.
can we also discuss how those fucking trucks make every parking lot totally obnoxious to use? i have normal sized cars and i’m sick of squeezing in next to someone’s prosthetic penis
They suck.
Sign this consumer reports petition about fixing front end blind zones at least.
I recently heard someone describe one as a Ford Compensator and I love it. Going to refer to them all as Compensators in earnest from now on. “Is that a 2023 Toyota Compensator?”
