A safe space to complain about jackass humans

They just put in this new little pedestrian refuge across from the new school. It had been under construction with a bunch of orange barriers for about a week but they all came down today

As we were walking to daycare pickup this evening we saw a guy hit it at probably 40mph and blow out his front tire lol

I guess that is so that the car can get airborne before hitting you?

There’s one of those in North Portland that takes out cars on the regular. Some of them are violent.

Hey, I know that intersection! Sadly, that video isn’t surprising.

These are everywhere around my place and have big fluro/reflective signs and bollards on them. Cars knock the signs down constantly, the council replace them, they get knocked down again. You’re never gonna keep me down.

Good to see the white bollard things doing their job!!

I love the bell bollards. It’s like judo for cars

A couple years ago they made bulb outs for bus stops with a bike lane running behind them on a big road here. Cars couldn’t stop hitting the bulb outs and drivers started demanding putting the bike lane back to how it was. Big fuckin pass on that. Somehow the city didn’t give in to their demands. But to thwart anyone from thinking we’re bike friendly, they installed this at the bottom of a hill.

You can take the lane or make a right and sharp left to cross at the offset cross walk.

hard pass on this every time, I’d practice bunny hopping the curb or guerrilla install a little ramp

normalize kickers as urban cycling infrastructure.

make it a skill issue

This morning the crossing guard was there at that spot and instead of talking football I told him about the blowout we saw last night (there were like three other visible tire scuffs at this point). He pointed out a car down the street with its flashers on that had hit it and had a blowout while he was parking his car nearby. He said it was loud so I assume speed was a factor again.

Now I don’t really wish continued automotive destruction at this spot, but hopefully word starts to get around that people should PAY SOME FUCKING ATTENTION WHEN THEY ARE DRIVING IN FRONT OF SCHOOLS AND DAYCARES. I’m assuming they are going to come back out this week and maybe put one of those flappy signs on it but the current configuration definitely has its own kind of efficacy.

Need to get these put in:

If the driver is skilled enough, they may end up unscathed!

maybe some paint on the curb or some such

Putting that little island in the middle of the street with zero signage or bollards is, as we’ve seen, worse than useless. One of those cars with a blowout is gonna plow through the front doors of the preschool!

Lol. I live near there. I was reading an r/Boise thread where folks were complaining about the stupidity of this design, and I thought, “It can be THAT bad.” Passed through there on my way to the post office one day, and boy, was I surprised. I avoid that intersection now.

Yeah I don’t get how ithe highway code even allows them to put that island there with no sign or yellow/black hi viz curb or something. It’s easy to miss (if you’re a distracted dumbass, which 1/3 of drivers are).
