The axle is shorter than the spacers

whoa!

And are the threads just where that lip above the spoke holes is?

edit: @Orloved sent me this earlier. I had assumed it was axle, and tbh it still looks like axle to me:

It was a 20 mm TA hub. Not many use cases for that. :man_shrugging:

I grant you forgiveness

Um

Also I just want to say that it’s 21 lbs and rides really great

My father is dedicated Softail fan. He had (still has) one of these fine Lightspeeds, which was his gateway into road bikes, the first being a Softride.

He now owns a gaggle of other very tasteful road bikes, but the one he rides the most is :drum::drum::drum: a Moots Psychlo X Ybb!

Takes all sorts, I guess.

I think the YBB is a neat little design. Never going to be able to afford a Moots though.

ok we have some (not very) dramatic developments on the hub front, which lead to a question…

So after steeling my reserve, I was able to confidently yank the NDS axle spacer off! From there things moved smoothly unthreading the DS spacer and double checking that yep, the freehub pops right off and all is in good working order. So the dilemma is

This 29-mm-long NDS spacer needs to be 5mm shorter, but it needs to be shorter out of the middle, not the end, as you can see:

Do any of you Hügi people know if there’s a replacement end cap that’ll work? It’s not hard to find replacements for 240 hubs, and I have a feeeeeling it’d fit, but maybe not!

Did Lucas Brunelle move to goddamn Florida? Absolutely hilarious if true

He was in Boston falling through the ice trying to ride on the frozen Charles not that long ago

240/350 end caps use a bigger (15mm?) axle, not the 9mm on the Hugi.

You can modify the spacer from the end, you just have to face off 5mm and bore it 5mm deeper.

The tandem hub shell does have a larger right side for the threaded portion, but it looks like from here the bearing and spacer distances are the same

Maybe I’m a perv but I find this project riveting.

Me too! I’ve dithered myself into similar holes and it’s a lot more entertaining watching someone else do it. And at least he can turn it into another Jalopnik article.

Think he has been in Miami all along. He just flies places to do dumb stuff.

ngl I want what he’s having (unless it is cocaine–it is probably cocaine, isn’t it?) to be having that much fun at whatever age he is.

Since the one I have is 135 it would be pretty easy to turn a copy on my lathe. It won’t have the fancy serrated washer or anything but it should work.

Naw man, surely some NOS option is out there.
It’s a moral imperative…

@capn_FANCYpants Congrats, you’re making a splash across the interwebs!
