That means I can rebuild it myself, though I have been warned that it the oil itself is going to smell awful. One buddy has already texted me that he wants to be there when I open up the fork, presumably just to smell how bad it is.
A lot of the filtering might be trying to avoid a Chloe Dygert type fiasco, right?
Sports are popular entertainment themed around athletic excellence, so it makes sense that they’d want some compelling narratives to enliven a series of events where people pedal from point A to point B, or in the case of CX and crits, point A to point A repeatedly.
I generally find influencer impact on public life gross and tacky, but Life Time’s requirement of what amounts to a video cover letter doesn’t seem that terrible.
Also the difference is that now the professional (or wannabe pro) sportser isn’t limited to groveling for media coverage but can make their own and have a solid count of fans. Unless someone is independently wealthy and/or sponsored by someone wealthy ya gotta play the game.
Speaking as a dinosaur… this guy is a dinosaur. He shouldn’t be surprised he didn’t make the cut and he shouldn’t be bitter. This smacks of the type of manufactured outrage men of a certain age and complexion like to accuse others of.
Someone’s gotta tell this guy that sports is entertainment and that most of the profit traditionally comes from seedy fucking gambling with definite ties to organized crime.
related to finding sports entertaining and seeing athletes as more than just performers in the event…
I remember back when Cosmo did HTRWW he mentioned an idea to make races more watchable, which was to include all the minor stories and dramas of the riders/team in a produced show that put together narratives that were compelling beyond just whoever the winner was.
Well… they did it for F1. The netflix show Drive to survive is fantastic and the entire time I was watching it I couldn’t help but think that this would be so doable for cycling… and isnt that what EF has been trying to do?
The whole cycling circus has way more potential for entertainment than is capitalized on with just showing the race…
Just wanted to say that I have not watched this show, but when I went to the F1 race here this year, I chatted with a middle aged woman from Baltimore who specifically said she warched the Netflix show and “had to see this” so I really think you are on to something
there are a multitude of reasons why this is extremely difficult in cycling vs F1 but a big one is that that the broadcast rights issues are extremely complicated in cycling and it seems that F1 is far more strong administratively to just make things happen
people are trying things but i’m not sure how far anything is going
Obviously we had hits and misses, and constant lack of access (in terms of the BTS aspect your referring to) was an issue we only occasionally surmounted, but this was basically the exact thesis of MFS.
It’s comical how much race organizers do not want you recording video of a race.
Pinkbike is trying to do this with their Academy show. It feels a bit like reality TV, but they’re still finding their footing. It’s probably more difficult with covid protocols, too.
Ive said it before that ya’ll work has been my favorite cycling coverage anywhere ever. The first trip you all did to the TDF was excellent fun. I would love to buy MFS coffee table book.
Nah it’s because they have exclusive contracts for the broadcast rights, and so they heavily restrict who’s allowed to take video. They’re just super anal about it and freak out about any video recording, even if it’s obvious you’re not recording the race in any way comparable to a broadcast (the logistics alone make that functionally impossible). It’s surprisingly not too difficult to get basic press passes to a lot of races, depending on the organizer—in my experience the TDF was really the only one that was stingy.
Thanks, yeah that stretch was the best work we did I think. I think something like a retrospective book would be cool, and definitely within the realm of possibility.
Netflix did produce a show for a couple of seasons, but it focused just on Movistar and the inter-team drama there. I thought it was pretty decent, but would be great to have a larger multi-team style show like Drive to Survive.
@teepz honestly moments after mentioning MFS I got an e-mail from Mythical State Of which is super fun right now and SO perfectly on trend, though about two years behind [smooth jazz lines.] Are ya’ll still connected to them in any way?
