lol this was pretty much my road bike for a while until I finally just started riding it last year

Made a cost sheet instead of riding this morning. Should probably add a couple thousand bucks for labor and consulting given all the time it took to buy the parts, store them, and then build it.

I thought the point of building from parts was so you never really knew the number

This scares me, none of the individual costs are much and all seem very reasonable but they really do add up.

I have shitter bikes that I’m sure have cost much more and I do not want to know how much more.

Sometimes it’s fun to do the math. That’s how I realized I spent 6-7x on a late 80s Hardrock that originally cost $250. And that was just fine.

never do the math, just buy the whole bike and go ride it.

Fourth option: buy a complete bike and replace all the parts. Could be placed anywhere in that distribution atmo.

You buy the bike, replace the parts, then see you have a bunch of parts sitting around, so you buy a frame to put them on, but then you also need some more parts to finish that bike up.

And then by the time you’ve got those 2 bikes all built up, drivetrains have 1 more speed and head angles are 1 degree slacker, so you need to repeat the whole process.

It me

truly a vicious cycle

I do a bike race
My bike isn’t quite perfect
Time to build a new bike
I’ll keep the old bike as backup

Now I have 5 backup bikes

Great news my neighbor wanted a bike so I thought I finally found a use for the $10 1990s trek singletrack I bought out of someone’s garage and put dozens of hours and hundreds of dollars getting roadworthy again.

But now he wants me to replace the thumbies with trigger shifters. I may have to keep it instead.

I buy a bike
I spend $$$ and time getting it dialled
I see a used one that’s longer lower slacker
I buy that bike, port parts on to it
I sell og bike for diminishing returns
Everyone profits :revolving_hearts:
