Crapbrapping or Pukebacking or Poopbarning

the former

endurance events that required a sleep

I blame Ira Ryan’s 2014 26-hour Oregon Outback effort

yikes was the original poop barn ™ really a decade ago?

I think Mike Curiak might get more blame/credit for organizing / winning the GDMBR in 2004.

Edit: this is a good video on how the race went down.

The poop portion was 2015

My first exposure to bikepacking was bikepacking.net in the early 2010s which at the time was heavily race-focused. It always appeared to me that it was race discipline and then “became” another type of touring later.

I think like most outdoors pursuits it started as a hobby or fun thing to do, and then someone claimed to do it best/fastest whatever. Then someone else. And at some point media plays into it as an article “dude goes for a nice long ride and camps out” just doesn’t grab eyeballs like “fastest known time” or whatever.

I’m thinking of stuff like rock climbing, where the initial challenge of a first ascent is just to do it, but then later you get folks timing themselves and making it a race.

Randonneuring would be an interesting thing to study, I think it has gone back and forth between race and not-race at least once, and even in not-race form there are still plenty of “FKT” bragging going on isn’t there?

Bikepacking came to NZ after a guy, Simon Kennett did the 2008 Great Divide, and started the kiwibrevet in 2010. The guy that started that site (you linked), Scott Morris is the guy who invented trackleaders.com . I think this completely changed the future of bikepacking as a thing. I think the other main tracking site is maprogress.com which is run by a kiwi.

I’m specifically talking about the barn that was pooped in on the Oregon Outback, not poopbarning in general!

I wonder if it gets a mention here…

I … I did not know that. It happened while I was gone, so I’ve just been nodding my head and agreeing for a while. :care:

@alp talk to me about that handlebar situation, please

it’s a “bless this mess” situation.

custom swept doom bars with a braze on for my sinewave beacon. got one of those cheap carbon handlebar extenders to keep my dry bag out in front and slightly away from cables, as well as redshift QR aero bars shimmed to 22.2 which aren’t pictured here. we’ve been trying to use braided nylon wire loom for cable management/to protect from rub on bags and other cables. I think it helps, and looks nicer than electrical tape.

I can try to get better specs on the doom bars rise/sweep when I’m back home in a week or so, remind me. they bend twice and are super wide, so there’s a hook on the ends that comes back more and is super great for single speed leverage when climbing. can’t reach the brake from there but I’ve enjoyed it lots

Neat! Id be really curious on a view from the saddle picture of the bars. They look so nice for SS.

The Tour Te Waipounamu starts soon. Rufus just shared his bike. Probably more an experiment than anything. Weight is critical in this event because hikeabike. Probably 95% of his gear will fit in his frame bag tho…

Is pinion at one to one normal? What kind of ratio is in there?
