I mean, it is The Year of Our COVID, but the DIY version is still relatively cheap. I bought some of the Wheels Mfg drifts to use with my “press” for headsets and PF biscuits.
i would like to get my park headset press gone and replace with something smaller. i don’t press headsets enough to want to give a fuck about ease. it’s so gigantic and takes up the better part of a drawer.
Some peoples who I normally trust suggested that the 12 speed Shimano chain’s power-link is problematic on sram stuff. But you can mix and match cassettes, but this is not what the Ratio Tech folks say. Has anyone run 12 speed Shimano cassettes on sram danglers or vice versa?
The Ratio faq has some interesting stuff in it.
DQ: due to the vagaries of my parts bin I’m considering pairing NOS Sora ST3500 9spd shakes with a newer RD-M785 clutched dangler with a 9 speed cassette on an road bike. There’s gotta be a reason that won’t work, right? Shadow something something?
What hub to buy? I need 28h, 142x12, HG 11.
Seems like slim pickins.
This is really the only thing I’m seeing.
EDIT: PURP
Yup, won’t work. The 10-speed MTB stuff is where the MTB stuff diverged to a different cable pull.
Thanks!
There are other options, but these spoke to me.
+1 for Bitex hubs. i was gonna recommend some but got confused by “HG 11” when all the options on bike hub store only say HG. i don’t know a lot about shimano compatibility but i know i use an HG bitex hub on a single speed bike and it works well.
Holy shit. Not sure why I’m surprised but Grant sells a “diy” headset press for $30.

I wonder how many people buy that when it’s patently obvious that it’s all-thread, two nuts and two large washers. How much is that at a big box, $10? $15? To me ordering that online, waiting for it to show up and negotiating with couriers is more hassle than going to a home improvement store.
I have that (branded different but it’s the same) and it’s pure garbage. Once you get any tension on it the bearing slips out of place and the washers stack up all crooked.
But it cost the same as the box store DIY assembly
I think it was $12 at Home Depot for a foot long chunk of 1/2 in threaded bar, two nuts, and 8 washers. It was probably $5-6 a few years ago.
I feel like a couple of 3d printed cones would improve that design greatly
Oh shit, yeah if the print holds up to the pressure
Or you cold buy a wood dowel, spin it in a drill and and carve it to shape with a rasp like god intended.
It’s easier to press one cup at a time. Headsets are a little less picky than bottom brackets in that regard.
Y’all are thinking too hard
From what I remember I tried that once. Stopped when it became obvious that it was not gonna go in straight and I was going to damage something if I whack it harder. Made an allthread headset press and did it with that.
I like to pay bike shops to do it
