Did you just ShartQ?

Alright guess I’ll buy a t handle non ball end so I don’t die the next time I try to ride this thing. Thanks for the advice y’all

Next question for the Tark hivemind - I got some Airtags for Christmas, what’s your favorite way to attach them to bikes?

i like the reflector themed mounts. i only have an air tag on my clydesdale and it’s under the foam false bottom in the basket that i keep my trash and pump in

What kind of bike? Best MTB mount I saw was a plug at the bottom of the steerer tube, so it’s really stealthy.

One grav grav, two commuter/tourer, one e-cargo

I use some 3D printed ones from Etsy that go under your water bottle cage. It’s stealth enough.

Any of them have a large enough chair pole to stick them inside? Best I’ve seen is inside the chair pole, wedged in with a little foam or rubber like a Di2 battery. I’d guess you have plentiful stealth spots to choose from on the cargo.

I saw a video a while ago that indicated you got best detection range if they were outside the frame or metal components, like under a seat or in a stealth reflector bracket. possibly a @halbritt link?

there are also some options like this muc-off one that put them inside a wheel or as a steerer plug

will they work in a faraday cage?

I don’t know, never tried. I’ve seen them work inside of bike tubes though. Why don’t you go and try?

Yup. They use very faint RF. Mine is in a silicone zip tie thingy tucked neatly under my saddle.

none of my bikes have a big enough orifice i don’t think. maybe the mtb but i think it’s a 31.6 post which is too small. i don’t know that they will be able to get radio frequency through a metal surrounding

I wonder if there’s other, similar, devices that have a form factor that might work better for being hidden in-on a bike.

Orbit makes different trackers compatible with findmy system that don’t use airtags so they should work but lack some features. Their glasses one is definitely small enough

Not sure if anyone has tried the Mucoff tubeless valve one, you need a pretty large tire

If I buy that, it’ll guarantee that my bike gets stolen.

what’s the plan after the bike is stolen and you know where it is because of AirTag

I read a story of a guy in Chicago who tracked his bike to a box truck parked in the alley, called the cops to help him get it out of the box truck and then they refused to even enter the alley or get out of their car. They eventually drove away, leaving him high and dry.
So I don’t know what you do in that situation if you don’t wanna kick the door in and fight some fools.

ive been really into watching cop cam vids on youtube lately and came across this one.

its a long stressful video but tldw dude called the cops and said his air tag was located somewhere in the area of those two houses so cops knocked on both doors asking about the bag and eventually found them but seemingly only because they smelled weed in one of the people’s house and used that as probably cause to get a warrant (more complicated than that really but thats the gist).

so im sure it depends on the situation and if your cops are “not gonna help you” shady or “oh shit opportunity to smell weed and search stuff” shady.

ACAB though, don’t expect them to help beyond signing a police report so you can file insurance claims
