Did you just ShartQ?

stalk and steal it back

I don’t know man, I’ve been watching a lot of cherry-picked cop videos on the cop YouTube channel and they seem to never do anything wrong. Checkmate, libs.

How much does it cost to ship a bike box these days? I haven’t shipped a bike in many years.

Looks like the battery for my Niterider headlight is dead and for the same price as a new battery I can get this is there another $150 light that would be better and still let me ride my MTB at night? Like this GlowWorm, I really can’t afford anything more expensive. I have the Outbound Hangover on my helmet and I wouldn’t be riding for more than 2 hours, not very technical terrain or fast.

Default “check bikeflights.com for an estimate” reply - I used them a couple times last year and it was straightforward

Probably not less than $75

Expensive as heck. Off the top of my head $120 minimum for a full bike partway across the country.

pirateship has a good estimator. For selling stuff I’ve basically quit trying to sell/ship a full bike just too much hassle packing and padding things to not get scratched and my time is never really compensated. Bare frame/fork or wheelset separately figure min $60 but have to be real careful down to the inch on box size its a PITA just sourcing or building the right box.

Something like a big 20" rigid Rockhopper frame will be right at the limit of triggering the next step up in price, not much room for padding so you have to be good at packing it which again takes time or just choose easy/bigger box but more $.

i absolutely hate packing complete bikes. was my least favorite thing to do at the shop and i had to glue tubulars too.

Yeah, I’m just pondering if it’s even worth it to sell a bike on eBay

i just shipped a 26er frame and rear wheel halfway across the US and it cost me $90. so i bet a standard modern complete bike would be at least $125. i feel like it used to be between $75-$100 and anything over $100 seemed ridiculous.

that tandem for one bike i built for pit viper ended up costing $440 to ship from the middle of US to utah.

Yeah, used to be I could ship a full bike for $65 or so…but turns out that “used to be” means like 20+ years ago.

@Nasho You can always get a price for a local shop to box it for you and then do the shipping calculation your self. As long as the buyer is willing to pay that would significantly lessen the hassle. Also gives you some coverage from the buyer complaining about damage and wanting a refund.

Personally I still say go FB marketplace or Craigslist and be OK leaving some $ on the table in exchange for getting it gone quicker and smoother.

I don’t mind boxing a bike up really. But as it gets more expensive to ship, it feels like more a hassle, it sits on eBay longer, any difference in estimate vs actual cost when I go to ship is larger etc.
And I know large shipping costs make me not want to pay as much for a bike on eBay either. A larger portion of the total cost to me is blown on shipping and I want to spend less.
I think you’re right. Local may get slightly less but there’s a lot of value in someone just coming to my house and taking it away.

ah beans. im old as fuck.

I feel like selling on eBay may be easier from an ‘answering stupid questions’ perspective, as there’s less options for that, but with the fees associated with selling on that platform, I don’t really see it as being viable anymore

I used Ayups for years, then finally treated myself to Gloworms. Which I never used cos my use case was mostly bikepacking and I went to dynamo. Pulled the gloworms out one night (after about 5 years) to make sure they still went and the point where the cord entererd the housing had dissolved. I fixed it with Sugru but it pissed me off. They make plenty of light if you are riding by yourself and you dont have someone behind you with more grunty lights casting shadows over you.

A friend sent me a bunch of his old Ayups just yesterday. An incredibley robust design. Got more than 6 hours out of a piddly battery today just testing if the batteries are still good. Might try one of the bigger batteries tomoz. Should be great for bikepacking without a dynamo.

So I want to put stupid jeep lights on my bakfiets.
If I buy these lights:

Then all I need is a battery, but what kind of battery do I need?

@derrickito what did you do to rig your big lights on the Bullit? (see Rusty’s question above).

If you don’t trust aliexpress lithium cells and packs, running it off power tool battery packs would be pretty cool since the lights are rated for 9-36v. You can find adapters for the major brands online
