Do the Shimano XT cranks (8100) also split like the Dura ace etc? Found a deal and want to try 170’s on my mtb.
the dura ace problem is they glued a shiny plate to the front of it and the glue failed, the xt is normal.
atmo
The 8100 is direct mount. I’m not sure what would split.
there’s no seam on these i dont believe, so i dont think they are glued together.
the xtr ones do split but they arent included in the recall.
left DA cranks still failed from being glued together.
Alright this thing is killing me. I didn’t ride it for four days (day off work with no errands, then an attempted camp trip on the Jeffsy before getting hit by a car), today my hands went numb in a couple miles and my elbows are killing me. I hate admitting defeat but this is seriously uncomfortable to ride.
Does anyone make long setback dropper posts? Or should I ditch the dropper and find a rigid post with more setback to test?
Have you heard of the FAIR Drop Best?
It’s basically an aftermarket seatpost clamp replacement for popular dropper posts that gives setback. I have one, and I can vouch that the quality is excellent, no creaking or wiggling. I stopped using it because it increased the reach too much for my out-of-shape back.
Might be a pain right now with tariffs because they’re Swiss, but since they’re not EU they might have dodged them.
Oh interesting, I hadn’t heard of these. Pretty clever.
Is it only happening on this bike, or other bikes as well?
Just this one
Not sure if I’ve shared this story but I had some nerve damage from riding to long and it was slow to go away. About 7 months. I noticed it would get bad about 2 kms from work, in a 22 km commute. I was annoyed it was taking so long. Then one weekend I observed that I was not getting the numbness on the same route on a casual ride of more than twice the distance, on the same bike… I concluded that there was a stress element to it, not that I consciously thought that my work was causing me stress. Stress does weird shit.
Does changing your shoulder and neck posture make any difference?
This sounds almost exactly like what I was dealing with when I had a pinched nerve in my shoulder from funky posture after an accident. Finger tingling, hand numbness, and achy elbow. I changed the fits and saddles on all my bikes nothing helped.
I talked to bike fitters about it and nobody could address it in a bike fit. I was taking some anatomy classes and found some similarities in my shoulder position and a common issue with pinched nerves due to shoulder position. In my case extra tight chest muscles and adductors were the root of it.
Stretching and strengthening my chest and adductors ended up fixing everything so I can hold my body in a better position on the bike. It’s a constant struggle still, gotta stretch most days if I ride or not so that I’m able to. Hope this helps.
That would be my vote, especially if you can use some of the credit you have at that bike shop. A shim and an inexpensive post could be like $50 before tax.
I know it’s like 90% core and 10% fit tweaks, but I can solve the fit issues quickly (hopefully) while the core slowly improves.
But goddamn it’s frustrating to ride a bike and ache the whole time
I think you’ll get a lot farther trying to take care of a few pieces of that 90% than going after a few pieces of that 10%. I wish you luck, it sucks to hurt on the bike.
I dunno, I ditched my Banshee frameset because of the same issue. (Termporarily, I hope.) 77º is just too steep for me on my terrain in my fitness. I’m on a 74º seat tube and it’s much, much better. I can ride that one for 2-3 hours and the limiting issue is my overall condition, not my hands.
I hope it works out, but sunk cost fallacy is a thing.
Oh, shartQ for the hive mind.
I need a BSA GXP bottom bracket, and I want a black one for fop chariot matchy matchy reasons.
Is Wheels Manufacturing worth the cost? It’s just a few euros less than a Hope and isn’t as pretty.
I sincerely HOPE you make the right choice here
They’re both good, there’s not much else going on other than a cup and a bearing. If it’s anything less than a Chris King ceramic get whatever sparks joy. Cane Creek is also excellent and makes a black bb, but probably not gxp.
This copy from modernbike.com kinda makes me want to buy a Hope bottom biscuit to replace my perfectly good Shimano unit (and the half dozen other perfectly good shimano units sitting unused in my biscuit bin).
Designed to face the worst British weather has to offer, Hope’s threaded bottom brackets feature high quality sealed cartridge bearings and fit a variety of cranksets.
@Shamp’s issue made me realize that I also get a lot more arm/hand aching/pressure on my ebike, then i looked at it and realized the seat was slid all the way forward. I did that initially when I build it because i didnt want to adjust the dropper height (it’s a 200mm dropper) and at max insertion, it’s just a hair tall, so i thought oh i’ll just slide the seat forward a bit.
it’s since been returned to the center of the rails. Have yet to get much riding on it, but it’d explain why I felt that extra hand pressure just cruising around the neighborhood.
