I would first just check to make sure the bearing cages aren’t rusty/on the verge of collapse then refresh grease. For the outside, scrub the cups with some steel wool then rub with a bit of oil.

have built a bunch of wheels this way, just put ā€œ2.17 crossā€ in the freespoke calculator and try not to overthink it on which holes you’re skipping in the hub 36-24 Spoking, by Damon Rinard

if it feels fine, ride it and dgaf. you aren’t going to fix the aesthetics of that headset no matter what you do this side of replacing it.

fwiw, the brush and oil will make it look less red and slow down future rust but once the chrome is flaked off there’s no going back.

Yeah that’s kind of what I figured. I think we’re gonna see how this rides and go from there. I don’t think anything is going to fail catastrophically.

Wd40 on an old toothbrush without disassembly is as far as I’d go with that one. If it works fine it’s fine.

Ok SQ for my bike: is the Tubus logo an appropriate way to ball out on a rear rack? I like that it hangs the panniers below the top platform and I’ve had really good experiences with Tubus before. Is there a different one we like more?

Is the difference between Evo and classic the mounting flexibility? This is going on a rim brake bike.

I like the Tubus Logo aesthetically. And it does get the panniers a bit lower. It is a heavier rack than the Cargo.

I think so.

I don’t get it

I’m a fan of the Logo for the reason of lower panniers with the bonus of the lower rails sticking out farther to the rear which can give some additional protection for the rear light.

The top platform is much narrower than something like the Cargo and that can mean doing some bending of the upper stays or finding some offset stays depending on the geometry of your upper mounts. Of the two of my bikes that have Logos, one (disc trucker) has barrel mounts and the stays are mounted to the inside (no bending needed), and the other (mod zero) has bosses on the outside of the seatstays and that required finding a set of offset stays. Thankfully there was a set in my bin leftover from another rack because offset stays seemed completely out of stock everywhere when I was looking (I lack the tools to bend 8mm stays).

OK, I’m sick of dealing with leaky shimano calipers. What non-DOT brakes should I buy? I’ll need to replace the front hose immediately, so if that’s easy to do, that’s a bonus.

TRP makes good stuff now I think maybe? I have no idea, I’ve literally never used a non-shimano hydro disk brake.

yeah what the fuck is shimano doing to their brand? i can’t see myself going back to shimano shifting after riding an AXS bike for a while. and the brakes all leak. sram brakes feel bad but at least they don’t leak?

Double check if there are different versions for different wheel or tire sizes. Years and years ago (like two decades jeeze!) I had a Logo that was a really tight fit on 700x35+fenders bike, but I got the road bike version not the 29er or whatever version. It’s a very sturdy great rack and allowed me to mount panniers a bit further back to avoid heel strike.

i’ve never had any of my shimano brakes leak.

am i special?
