Did you just ShartQ?

520s have the plastic bushing (Item No. 2 called the “lock bolt”) that wears and the pedal body becomes wobbly on the spindle. I’ve had this happen to every single pair of the 7+ pairs I’ve used. Resolved with a simple disassembly and adjustment but who wants the hassle of doing that every year or two?

The 540 doesn’t have this issue and just for this reason it’s a significantly better pedal, regardless of the difference in cost.

520s are false economy!

my xt mtb pedals feel terrible and they havent even been ridden that much. i mean they are like 10 years old but they have felt pretty rough when you spin one of them for like 8 years and its fine.
so based off this i say go for the cheaper ones.

XT and XTR offer a bit better platform (if your shoe matches up). Better for longer distance stuff I think.

I’ve been chasing the Speedplay Syzr dragon for years and I’m using HT these days. Cleat is VERY similar to SPD but more surface area. With a very stiff shoe feels pretty close to the road pedal experience.

But yeah, for JRA m520 is the only way to fly.

Me, too. The NiteRider offerings also look good, but I’ve been out of the loop for quite some time.

tell me more about ht- i have a pair of leopards or something and for some reason i had trouble clipping in

A challenger appears!

I have some 540s, XTs and just got some XTR when I got my new bike. Nicer pedals feel nicer. XT was perfect when they were only $100.

The different clears make it a little confusing. I can’t remember the designation, but the hardest to clip into cleat is what I use on the gravel bike. I use the medium cleat on the mountain bike since it’s much easier to just stomp on the pedal and be immediately in.

are there some shoe combos that are just incompatible? i straight up couldn’t go for a ride

I think you should give Time ATACs a look. They have the float of an eggbeater, but resistance before unclipping so they’re really safe and stable. The ones on my touring bike are 12 years old at this point and just recently got serviced again and are running strong. The carbon ones on the roadie are the same age and flawless.

I thought I still had some Shimano MTB shoes in a box somewhere, but I guess I turned em into store credit at some point.

So now I’m open to all two-bolt pedal suggestions.

Maybe I’ll go back to CB Candy, I had those for years with no complaints.

What size drill bit should I use to make a hole in my fender for an M5 bolt? Freedom units.

Figured it out.

Y’all too slow

RE: fender chat

Did you have fenders on your Sutra? Know off the top of your head what fits?

Yeah. SKS Blumels. Pretty sure these. The idea was to get something wide and flat so I could have 2” knobbies on there and still keep the fenders on. They were overkill ATMO

Edit: looks like there’s and aluminum version that’s half the weight now. Get those. These things are heavy.

I ordered some Record 10-speed shifters from eBay and the left shifter is acting wonky. It looks like the ratcheting cable carrier isn’t returning fully when the thumb paddle is pressed. Any ideas on what needs to be replaced?

How do you uninstall a CushCore setup? Even with a Bead Jack I couldn’t get the bead loose. Ended up slicing the old tire like a bagel to get the insert out to make space to wrangle the bead.

The park tool BMT-1 or big channel locks to really squeeze the bead. I think it depends on the tire too.

I’ve seen a guy do it with the heel on his cycling shoe but déclassé ya know?

On its own or with a cable/gorilla installed? It’s been ages since I’ve pulled one apart but maybe a WD40 rebuild to see if that loosens up any hard grease.
