Did you just ShartQ?

Oh good point. I was thinking threading not taper.

found the tech doc for the FC-S105, and that listing on velobase might just be kind of the original spec for the spindle

Holy cow tech docs from '85 on their own site. That’s impressive.

not as impressive as that old 105 logo.

so. good.

someone at shimano spent a lot of 2018/2019 uploading old tech docs, i seriously respect whoever there fought for the resources to do that

I might have something for you. It won’t be new but it’ll work. Lemmie do some digging.

To remove ā€œfrozenā€ pedals from an aluminum crank, remove the crank and pedal from the BB spindle, heat the pedal end of the crank over gas flame cooking stove until it sizzles to the wet touch. Using a pedal wrench, the pedal usually unscrews relatively easily without damage.

Has anyone ever done this? I’m out of ideas with this one stuck pedal

What have you tried?

is it more important to save the pedal or the crank?

Nothing!

So far I have tried brute force, plus brute force after leaving ice on it which I saw in a youtube video I am unable to find again.

Crank. Pedals can be tossed.

For the record, I’m aware that NDS is clockwise to remove.

what crank? this is standard procedure for getting steel stuff out of alloy (also, penetrant {wd40 is actually great for this} and hitting it with a hammer and punch) but i wonder about this and, say, a bonded aluminum shimano crank

Put some penetrating oil on it, let it soak in overnight or so, and then try hitting the wrench with a hammer. Don’t try that with a 6mm hex though, use a big ol ugga dugga for that maneuver. You want a sharp shock.

Or you can fuck around with burning yourself on the stove.

What about a breaker bar long enough and a place to stand?

90s campy arm with shitty wellgo bmx pedals put on about 9 years ago.

yeah i’d yolo it. penetrant, add percussion to the pedal, try it, then heat if no results.

Will triflow work? I’m trying to get this bike shipped tomorrow without a trip to the hardware store.

It’s my touring bike that I left in a friend’s basement for a few years because I moved to a smaller apartment. It looked like this when I found it. Avert your eyes if you’re squeamish

The offending pedal

Put some wheels on the bike with chain enhanced put crank arm forward in a place you can stomp on it. If that doesn’t work apply some heat to the crank arm with a propane or map gas torch and try again. Not too much heat you only really need to get the alu to 200 F or so then it should come loose pretty easy

VT certainly has more experience with metal shit than i do. triflow better than nothing but wd40 is actually a penetrant and you or your neighbor probably have some kicking around

There’s a project farm where he tests a ton of penetrant solutions and they help but they aren’t magic. Heat is magic.
