Shortened the hose and bled the rear brake yesterday using the lever bleed method. Worked like a charm! My brakes are the Easy Joint version (hose not attached to the lever), so I just had to cut the hose and smang in a new barb. Having used SRAM brakes almost exclusively for the past five years, I was shocked at how much easier and effective Shimano’s bleed system worked.

I love everything about the shimano system but some part of me wishes the caliper side had a thread on instead of friction fit bleed hole.
Not sure if it matters in practice but its just one of those things that bothers me.

You’re not alone. This is the worst thing about Shimano wet brakes.

My 80s trek has this, which fits just housing.

Also, interestingly on the non drive side.

Yeah, that freaks me out just a bit.

Literally hate that shit!!!

Nothing worse than doing the whole thing cleanly and then having the damn thing pop off at the last moment.

I’m probably too late on the stuck pedal thing, but there’s no stuck pedal I ever encountered that a long enough breaker bar couldn’t get loose. Especially if you can get the other pedal off, put a breaker bar over the opposite crank arm (put a rag over the arm) and another breaker bar on your pedal wrench on the wrench flats. We used to have pairs of bars in 2’, 3’ and 4’ lengths. The 2’ bar was almost always enough.

Oh, and definitely WD-40, liquid wrench or similar.

We used to be the number one shop in town for bikes that sat out in the backyard a block from the beach for 12 years, so I’ve seen a lot of stuck shit.

I ended up taking it to the shop and it was off in seconds. Not sure why I had such an issue.

Really early on in my wrenching days I had a really stoned conversation with an older wrench who told me ā€œ90% of being a bike mechanic is learning how and where to apply force.ā€

It’s probably not literally true but it’s not not true.

Oh I for sure loosened it. My ego is intact. There’s no way I didn’t loosen it.

I get better at loosening shit every year.

Woman at work left and gave me some muesli bars. Luckily I read the wrappers. They were for loosening shit. Why do people eat things like that?

She must be constipated

I’m guessing she didn’t read the label when she bought it or she wouldn’t have given them to you.

Looks similar to mine. Used unferruled brake cable as well.

Could just be the marketing? I have a bowl of muesli most mornings, definitely keeps me regular
