Did you just ShartQ?

If I’m going to have two wheelsets, in theory, for the 696, how important is it that the rear hub and cassette are the same in both sets?

Do you want the opportunity to dither with tuning shifting and brake pad alignment every time you swap wheels?

I think basically everything Fairdale makes is 1x. See tons of their hybrids on campus, look good

This really makes buying a nice rear hub hard to swallow. Is the DT 350 better enough vs the XT to justify buying it twice?

The answer you don’t want to hear

Yes

The 350 has cartridge bearings, if that is important to you. The seals on the XT should hold up to slop, but #YOLO.

or pony up the $70 and give them any RAL code you like?

Mine just arrived and the paint is… iunno fucking great for seventy dollars. As good as I’ve seen on any bike that wasn’t a Pegoretti:

That’s in a glancing light, so pretty much the worst conditions. There’s a tiny bit of waviness, but it’s clear that’s was prep rather than in the clear.

Time will tell if the paint is durable. I’ve personally seen better finishes, but those were ones that I’d wet-sanded and buffed myself. I’d intended to wet sand this if it needed, but it doesn’t. After the paint has cured for a few more weeks, I’ll test it with the lightest polish I have and then wax.

Initial impressions of the frame are good. It looks every bit as good as folks say. Nothing is amiss, and it’s packed well with a reasonable amount of new materials that don’t stink, wasn’t overly shrinkwrapped or anything. Chair post looks nice. Also came with a bag with all the hardware and a handwritten list of things that should be in the bag on the outside of the bag.

So, all legit, well, except that it came through customs with a declared value of $120 and was listed as “jewelry show accessories” from one Candy Wong.

'sup, Candy.

I dont’ think that’s too far off, depending on your component choices.

$70 for decent gloss paint is a bargain shartmo

I don’t even need this frame but I want it and Heath is eroding my willpower

I do look forward to the ensuing jewelry show, to make good on the declaration

pretty sure I spent close to $70 on spray cans before I figured out how to use them on a project recently

dang, I want one of these frames just to choose a fun color.

This is funny to me as some of the older Pegorettis (including a BLE frame set I briefly owned) were known for iffy paint quality.

Anyway, that gray looks great and $70 for that paint is amazing!

Oh, weird. I’ve never owned one, but I’ve handled a couple brand new ones and the paint looked amazing.

Also, Land Shark.

here’s the thing about the 350- you can swap cassette from hub to hub by just swapping the whole freehub body no tools. also yeah they’re good as fuck. worth it over shimano ATMO

I like DT240, but I’m a bit leery of the newer version.

DT350, I’m not so sure it’s any better than Bitex from my vantage point. Anyone with direct experience? @EndpointBraden or @ergott ?

that should use drop-in bearings, with no pressing at all

DT350 is star ratchet, not whatever bitex is… pawls?

350 is mechanically the same as 240 but heavier. Can be upgraded to more engagement, is pretty bombproof.

DT is absolutely more durable over all. The centerlock bitex hubs have had some issues in my experience. If you go Bitex go for the 6 bolt ones. Mechanism is stronger. Yolo/ymmv.

It is? I should look more closely, I think I assumed they were pawls. Some DT hubs are because I have an accidentally’d DT freehub floating around here somewhere that has pawls in it.

I’d ordered the wrong thing and had it sitting in my parts bin for a while, went to install it in a 240 hub and got really confused.

dt is also among the most configurable i’ve run into with a few caveats. not that much/anything else does the same with fewer caveats, but it’s worth thinking about the future before assuming that it will definitely be possible to swap for x standard
