Did you just ShartQ?

There miiiiight be crud inside the mechanism; if so, nailing it with cleaner should fix it

Thanks - did a little contact cleaner which didn’t do much, will try the derailleur cleaner which might do a little more degunking

SQ: for a 1x drivetrain do I still to the big/big + 2 links for chain sizing?
SQ: for a 1x drivetrain it’s smarter to have the chainring line up with the middle of the cassette right?

Were the lakes not wide enough or just didn’t fit for other reasons? I have a hell of a time finding wide enough shoes and lakes ended up working for me in the specifically wide sizes (I think).

depends on the dangler.

Using a random old derailleur in a 1x setup? Yeah, pretty much.

SRAM/Shimano 1x-specific derailleur designs - with the upper pulley highly offset from the cage pivot - are a bit sensitive to having a correctly sized chain, and call out a few more extra links. Check the setup docs for your specific derailleur.

I have…. Iunno medium feet but need a slightly wider toe box. Shimano works fine for me. Accidentally ordered my size in wide once and my foot was swimming in it.

So, maybe that?

I usually mark a measurement in small/small where the chain is as long as it can possibly be and have the RD take up the slack then check BIg big + 2 just to make sure the RD can take that too because I just build everything out of hodge podged stuff.

ah, the classic ā€œmake the chain as long as possible so you can safely rip a link out trailside if neededā€ method

shimano also has excellent sizing documentation but tbh unless you have a reference in their ecosystem it’s tough to do much with. which is no fault of theirs

My Hobbit feet agree with this. My feet also work with giro rumbles.
Specialized are way too narrow for me.

tl;dr: they’re wide enough everywhere but the toe box.

I’ve been wearing Lakes in 47 wide for nearly 10 years. I’ve only recently come to realize they only ā€œfitā€ because they’re a size too big - I have nearly 1/2cm of empty space in front of my toes. This isn’t necessarily a problem in and of itself but it does limit how far back I can mount cleats. On my CX238s I cannot get the cleat back far enough. On my MX237s I can, but only because I’m using the rear set of holes in the most rearward position, and it barely gets there. Also the CX238s are gigantic (way more volume than the MX237s) and I have to crank them down constantly throughout a ride.

I did the foot sizing thing Lake has on their website and it turns out I need a 46 wide - the competition last in a 46 wide matches my foot dimensions nearly exactly (within a mm). So I ordered MX238s in a 46 wide and the length is totally perfect. Unfortunately the toe box is too tight - they feel like I can’t move my toes at all, and would almost certainly make them numb. Also they (unsurprisingly) have the same too-much-volume problem as my CX238s. I returned them and now I’m trying to figure out what to try next.

Unfortunately living in a small town in the midwest makes this a lot more challenging because none of the local shops will have anything in stock that will fit me. And I get it, shoes must be a huge pain for shops to deal with. So I’m trying to find something on Amazon I can order, because at least they have easy returns, while also accepting the fact I’ll probably have to take a full day to drive to Indianapolis to visit every shop there and hope I luck into one that carries something that will fit my (apparently very weird) feet.

Thankfully for now my too-big MX237s work ok and I can still ride, though they’re very old and make a bunch of creaky noises from the tongue rubbing against the uppers (I think).

I’ve got a new modern Deore 1x10 dangler so yeah guess I’ll have to read the docs

Thanks y’all

M4120? Not actually a super-1x-specific design. Saving you some time: dealer manual is going to tell you ā€œbig-big + two half links (one full inner/outer link)ā€.

Oooh, this sounds perfect for me. I need to check their online sizer.

I have feet shaped like an ellipse -widest in the middle. For normal shoes I always end up in some sort of ā€œapproachā€ shoe because they have laces all the way down close to the toes so I can go wide in the middle and still not leave my toes swimming in space.

Yep. Big/big plus two was too short though, plus 4 was the solution.

The only bike shoes I’ve ever liked for my wide ass size 13s have been specialized. I have a pair of Shimanos that I’ve been try to make work but it’s a no. Good thing I never ride clipless anymore. Too bad 5.10 has gotten narrower and narrower since the Adidas takeover. My freeriders juuuuust fit width wise and only really after a few weeks wear. Sneakers aren’t supposed to need a break in period goddamnit. :colbert:

Since we’re talking shoes, I’m gonna recommend elastic laces. They’re amazing. Just the thing for a guy with a bad back and a toddler.

I’ve wanted some elastic laces for a while but always assumed the heel slip would be bad enough to ditch em
